Yep - plain magnesium will help wonders. I use Natural Calm and can feel it working pretty quickly. If I don't take some every other day at least, I wake with leg cramps at night (if I'm not already waking to go to the bathroom or to take more papaya enzymes for acid reflux). I agree, don't get anything mixed with calcium; you want just magnesium.
I take this same supplement and it completely saved me from anymore leg cramps!
Interesting. I've always been told cal/mag is the way to go. I'd much prefer to go with just mag as I feel I get more than enough calcium anyway. A bit late now I guess, but I might still try to switch over.
I haven't had the leg cramps as bad this pregnancy but I've had them horrible bad in the past. Never really found much to help. They say make sure to get potassium too, not sure if there's truth in that. Eating a couple extra bananas or something won't hurt anything though.
LOL bananas actually cause mine. I had heard they would help so I was eatting them daily and every night I would wake with the worst charlie horse. Finally I didn't eat one for a day and that night no leg cramps. It just really depends on the balance on calcium, magnesium, sodium and potasium. I take magnesium for my TMJD. And if forget to take it my jaw hurts. Also if I take a calcium supplement or even consume a calcium laiden food shortly after taking the magnesium my jaw hurts.
hehehe.... I was going to hop on here and say extra calcium really helps! That is what my hypnobabies book suggests and it helps for me! They say 1200- 1500mg day of a good quality cal mag supplement as the mag helps the cal. (Watch out a lot of cal supps are low quality and poorly absorbed, cal citrate is a good one, avoid carbonate). When I upped my calcium intake they lessened considerably. I drink raw milk (careful there) yoghurt and eat organic cheese, then take cal mag on top of it. Potassium is important too, bananas or a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a little water really helps (the acv after meals has just been shown to moderate sugar levels helping to control weight gain, I read that recently...) Anyay, play with all of that and good luck!
