I'm glad you have so much support!  That sounds like a really good idea to send out a mass email.  It has to be difficult to keep going over the same information again and again.  Please take care of yourself!  Micah needs a healthy mama!  That's exciting that he may be able to come home soon.

Oh Mama, you've been through so much, so fast! It's wonderful that you are getting help and support and that you are aware of your limits-that can be so difficult once you are a mother. It's so exciting that he may come home so soon! I'm keeping you all in my thoughts.

Congratulations on the birth of your son!  I know NICU time can be so hard, especially with another child at home, but it does sound like you've got a great support system in place.  We struggled with feeding a lot with my first two, who were 36 and 33 weeks, and for Micah to be off the feeding tube already sounds like amazing progress!  I hope you're feeling better and getting the rest that you need, and when the time comes that you have the energy for it, I'd love to see some pictures of Micah.

Here are some pictures, finally!  We are home now, woohoo!  Though we got almost no sleep last night.  Hopefully he's just getting adjusted.

He is adorable, Danielle!  I'm so glad that Micah is finally home, and that you are on the mend as well (so scary, and one more thing to worry about!).  Its great to hear that you have such a great support system in place too, and that it sounds like they are organizing themselves (or that someone other than you has taken the lead on organizing)!  I hope that now that you are all together at home things will settle down and you can start getting to know your precious little son.

Night #2 at home was better than the first, thankfully.  Despite a nurse friend saying she would wait until he's 2-3 months and has better head control to bring him into bed with us, we're doing it anyway.  He seems to sleep better at night that way (during the day he sleeps alone in the co-sleeper no problem!)  Part of it is that his little nose seems to be a lot more congested at night.  We have the pediatrician appt this afternoon so I'll see if there's something we should do about that in addition to suctioning his nose.  I'm also really curious about starting to wear him in the Moby and/or Maya wraps.  The instructions for both say to wait until he's 8 lbs (he weighed 7 lbs 5 oz. two days ago) and talk to a doctor if he has low muscle tone.  I haven't had a chance to check out the mothering.com down syndrome/special needs forum yet.

My daughter's definitely showing signs of neediness.  She had a melt-down yesterday morning when I didn't get up with her and her step-dad took her to the bus.  He's been a dad figure for her as long as she can remember, but she's used to cuddling with me before she gets out of bed.  So we talked about it and today she came in to cuddle with all 3 of us before she left for school.  Afternoons are a little rough because she needs a lot of attention and that's when I'm the most exhausted, even with taking a nap before she gets home.  Yesterday I gave what I thought was a lot of attention and she still needed more.

I'm sure it's a big adjustment for her.  I know my kids feel like bottomless pits of need right now, and they're not even competing with anyone they can see.  It must be stressful for you to worry about balancing their needs.

It will be a relief to wear Micah, huh?  I love being mobile again with a content baby.  I hope he enjoys it!  Are you using saline drops?  They make gentle ones for babies.  That helps with the suctioning.  I know both my kids had constant colds as babies, and we had them sleep in their car seats on the bassinette of the pack n play or in the papasan.  I unofficially co-slept with them, but just because I always fell asleep nursing them.

Glad you had a better day!

Aliy,  my  heart goes out to your friend.  I'm glad she has a good friend to support her.

My good news for the day is that Micah nursed!  That may sound surprising, but because he's gotten used to the bottle, it's been hard to nurse.  I knew he could do it because he would latch on briefly, then pull back and wave his head around in frustration.  I'm determined to nurse him because pumping around the clock really sucks, not to mention all the warm fuzzy reasons for nursing.  I've been producing more than enough milk (sharing it with a friend with an adopted baby), but it just takes so much time.  So this morning we were doing some naked time (kangaroo care) lying down in bed and I was able to get him to latch on and nurse for a long time, without even using the nipple shield.  Hopefully we'll have more of these sessions as we convince him that that's the best way to have his meals delivered!

I know that nursing difficulties are common with DS, but I was able to nurse my DD without any issues.  Due to the low tone, I couldn't use an Ergo until later than I could with my other children. She was too slouchy.  She did like the sling, though!

BTW I co-slept too. It never occurred to me not to. :)

Enjoy your sweet one. I just gave birth to another baby this month and going through all the newborn stuff again makes me sad that I didn't enjoy DD as much as I should have in those early days (I also found out the diagnosis at birth). I was so worried and scared. As it turned out, most of the things I stressed over never came to pass or really turned out to be non-issues in the scheme of life. Now I wouldn't change her (or her diagnosis) for anything.  Truly. heartbeat.gif

I'm glad you updated, and I glad he's nursing!  I hope he really takes to it, and soon!  Pumping is so time-consuming and plastic.  I have been thinking of you!  Hope DD is adjusting and you are all happy.

beanbean, that's really helpful to hear.  I feel like we had just gotten to the point of just enjoying Micah, when the pediatrician called (just two days ago) and said she's concerned about the results of the room air test that we did to see if he could come off oxygen, and suspects that he could have pulmonary hypertension.  He had a heart echo done the day we found out that he had DS, and were told that the results were good, just a couple of minor abnormalities that they wanted to check in 6 months.  I had no idea at the time how common heart problems are with DS, and didn't even register what the minor abnormalities were.  After I spoke to the pediatrician I looked up PH online and got really scared.  Of course it was Friday night and I couldn't call the pediatrician back and ask for more information.  I've calmed down a bit since then, partly after hearing from other moms on the BabyCenter DS and babies with heart problems groups.  But I realized that it was like reliving the DS diagnosis:  after getting abnormal quad screen results during the pregnancy, the level II ultrasound seemed to rule out DS, but then of course we found out otherwise.  This time, I thought that his heart was fine and then, boom, maybe it isn't.  I was also experiencing another layer of grief about how common so many health problems come with DS, that that's part of the package.  We have an appointment with the cardiologist on Thursday, and we're hoping for the best.

Micah actually has pretty decent tone, so I think the issues with breastfeeding may have more to do with being a late preterm baby and getting used to the bottle (when we started it at the hospital, I didn't know about finger-feeding or cup feeding, etc.).  Now that I know he can breastfeed, the trick is finding the right conditions to convince him to keep trying.  He can't be too sleepy, but he also can't be too hungry, because he gets frustrated.  It's a pretty fine balance!

More good news--we went to the cardiologist today and she said that Micah has a "perfectly normal heart."  So he doesn't have pulmonary hypertension.  What a relief!
