I'm 14 weeks today and ran out of prometrium a couple days ago. I was on it with my other kids and was fine stopping but I always get nervous. I keep thinking about going to buy progesterone cream so that I can use that for awhile and gradually wean off it. It's hard not to worry all the time.

I started weaning off slowly around 13 weeks and will be completely weaned off by 15 weeks. I took a very conservative view and probably could have weaned off sooner and more quickly, but I just wanted to play it safe.

As far as development goes, by 14 weeks your placenta should have completely taken over progesterone production, so there shouldn't be a need to continue supplementing.

The issue with stopping suddenly vs. weaning slowly isn't really so much a danger to the pregnancy at this point as the possibility of side effects (headaches, etc.) from the sudden stopping. I know it's so nervewracking to stop something that has helped you carry the pregnancy so far, but you'll be fine

My RE told me to stop around 10.5 weeks, because he said that's about the time the placenta begins to take over, and you're pretty much out of the danger zone. So I went from two suppositories a day, to one a day for like 4-5 days at and then stopped them at around 11 weeks. (I never had progesterone issues though-just a precaution since it was IVF). I would read up on the placenta thing though, I think when that's established, you have no real need of the supplements.
