Just a little poll!

It's my first time and even though my midwife assures me losing weight in first trimester is ok, I am just the teensiest bit concerned I am not showing in the slightest (at least I dont' think I am?!). Guess I am just ansty!
I am at 9 and a half weeks and am 110 lb (after having lost 8!)

I have a friend who is pg with her 2nd and said she was definitely showing by 8 wks.

Expecting 1st 5/25/11 after topsy turvy two years of trying. Married to best guy ever. Always <3 .

w/ ds, folks didn't even notice really at 7 months! (I remember going to an eye doctor and had to tell her - she was shocked and thankful since she was about to dilate my eyes - a no-no for pregnant women, evidently)

but I'd say folks who 'knew' me could tell around 20 weeks. It took a while, I have a long torso.

I actually never had to buy any maternity clothing, my jeans fit up until the end, which was a bit shocking. I carried really high though, just needed to wear my longest tank tops.

For me, it was not till some time into the second trimester. Even at 20 weeks most people would probably think I was just carrying extra weight in my tummy. It was a little after that when I started to really look unmistakably pregnant.

I also have a long torso. I'm at 14 weeks and still not showing--just bloated/pudgy around the middle.

I posted a poll about this on MDC a few weeks ago: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...+start+showing

Seems like most people don't show until 16-20 weeks.

I'm almost to 13 weeks, and not really showing - honestly, it looks more like bloating than a baby bump. And a friend of mine, due in December, wasn't showing until well after her 20th week, and even then, people didn't believe her when she told them how far along she was. We were both super sick (she lost about 10 lbs in the first trimester, I've lost a little over 6), so that may have contributed. I've had more people comment on the weight loss and telling me to take better care of myself than anything else (so frustrating, by the way... and I know I've said it before, but if one more person mocks me for not finishing the food on my plate, I will stab them with a fork. No really, I mean it this time.)

The long and short - I think everyone is different. But the fact that you don't have that telltale baby bump yet is totally normal, first time around. You're not alone!

I started showing around 4 months with my first and I was kind of fat back then but long torso. My sister was thin with her first and average sized torso and didn't start showing until like 6 months or so really. So, don't worry about it. Eat well and stay hydrated. Trust your midwife on this one.

Before I got the pregnancy test... so 7-8 weeks? I have a special circumstance though (malformed pelvis and abnormally short torso from pituitary dwarfism). It was the showing that prompted me to go get my blood drawn, actually. I thought I had a cyst!

I always show fairly early, but I'm petite and short waisted. It has to go somewhere, lol! I think a lot of it has to do with how you're shaped and how baby is positioned. I've known several women who hardly show even at the end but have big healthy babies.

Happily married, busy mom to a houseful :-)

Expecting again early Oct 2014!

No one could really tell I was pregnant until at least 24 weeks...and even then not really. I had someone ask me if I was 5 months pregnant the day before dd was born at 39w 4d.

For my first, I was at least 5 months along before I showed enought that people started wondering, and it wasn't until the last 2 months or so that it was convincing enough that people had the nerve to comment.

With my second, I'm 11 wks today and I doubt very much that anyone but the people who know me the closest (who already know) would suspect anything.

Well, I must be weird, because I got my first comment at NINE WEEKS! Since then, I've gotten several more, all people who know me, though. I don't think I'm showing, per se, but I definitely have a small bulge! (I was thin to begin with, and maybe I have a short torso? I have no clue how one determines that.)

I think people started asking when I was due when I was about 34-36 weeks with my first. When I said "Next month", I got a lot of people who said "Are you sure?" (yes exact words and more than one person!). Apparently I have a tipped uterus though so maybe that had something to do with it? And I was very skinny at the time.

I totally understand about being antsy. I mean, we're pregnant, but don't look like it! I want to look pregnant! :-) I am at 14 weeks and am starting to look fat, but not pregnant. Gah!

Thanks all for your feedback! I guess I just have to remember that there is no real "normal!" It's amazing how my worries/emotions really do swing from day to day!!

I was surprised to hear some of your different situations! I know for me, I am always super-paranoid to EVER say anything to a woman that appears pregnant without really knowing!

I feel and appear just a bit bloated. I think it's due more to gastric issues than a true baby bulge! Who knows!? Almost all my pants feel uncomfortable I think due to the nausea Ick feeling that is always lurking. I may have go shopping for that if for no other reason right now! I think the belly band sounds like a good idea to help with that... I could see myself continuing to use it well after pregnancy too for clothes that may not fit perfectly.

Thanks again everyone!

Lulu -

I'm totally in the same boat... With clothes being uncomfortable largely because of nausea and maybe a little bloating. Even just a little tightness seems to be irritating my stomach, and I worried that while a bella band would allow me to walk around with my pants undone (which I am NOT used to yet...), it would still cause problems with nausea.

I'm actually wearing the band today, though - I took one look at my pants this morning and decided to give it a try. I was a bit worried around lunch time, but it's worked great so far today... I don't know if that's my fading nausea or just that the band allows more give than standard pants. Either way, I'm thrilled with the results.

Hope that helps?

I started showing between 13 - 14 weeks with my first... I'm at 11 now and definitely showing. But in both cases, my fat that was already there is just being pushed up and therefore looking like a baby bump :-)

I could loose about 20 lbs. (more than that, probably) I'm starting this pregnancy off 10 lbs lighter than I was with my first, so maybe I'll be able to get to my more comfortable weight after #2 arrives. :-) a girl can hope!

I have a short torso and was very small before pregnancy, with a pretty much flat stomach. I am 12 weeks and people already notice! I have only gained 6 pounds, but I think the belly part is probably just bloat and water weight.

Well, if by showing you mean when others notice, not for quite a while. By 18 weeks I was a little thicker but friends still had to wonder and it was my behavior more than my body that tipped them off. I kept rubbing my belly and 1 friend commented that those who were "fat" like her rather than pregnant would never do anything to call attention to their belly like that (not that it was concious). I felt large to me and needed to modify some pants by about 10 weeks but I tend to favor high waisted pants. As for showing where strangers could tell, yeah, 7, maybe six months. At work I was 7 or 8 months because I wear scrubs and they hide a lot. Even so, people were shocked when I told them when I was due.

I remember being kind of annoyed about it at some times. I had some issues with nosebleeds for days at 22 weeks and continually had to remind the medical staff I was pregnant. 1 even wanted to argue with me. Dubiously, "You don't look pregnant."

I am also tall with a long torso. (as for how you'd know this, you'd have issues with fit in regular clothes).

I have a feeling it is going to be sooner this time. I feel so bloated.

I don't have any earlier belly pictures from my first pregnancy, but this was me during my first at 17 1/2 weeks... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fwyGvoajL8...n_4-months.jpg

I was showing (and had been for a while) but could have hidden it with baggie clothes had I wanted to...

yeah - the high-waisted pants are killing me. ALL my work pants are high-waisted... so I'm now sporting the bella band with a few pairs, and ordered my first couple pairs of maternity pants this morning.

PS - Crystalyn, that's an awesome picture (and a great shirt!)

people that knew I was pregnant could tell by 20 weeks, but it wasn't until around 24 weeks that I looked pregnant in normal clothing. I'm 5'9" and pretty thin with a long torso, so I think that hid the baby well I liked to wear tight shirts when I was pregnant the first time, which made it more obvious, but had I continued wearing looser clothing people might not have known until I was closer to 30 weeks.

I'm just so gassy that depending on what I've eaten (pretty much everything makes me gassy now though) I might look like I have a little bulge from time to time. I'm at 12 weeks tomorrow. I still fit into all my normal clothes however and will be sporting my corset on Halloween very comfortably. I'm on the tall side, and lost some weight during morning sickness, so maybe it will take a bit longer.

DDC crashing! Sorry! I am 5'10" and have a long torso. I wasn't over or underweight before pregnancy. The first person noticed at roughly 16 weeks. No one else noticed until 17. I'm now 18 weeks, and it's only because I wear slim-fitting shirts that people can tell. I've gained 3-5 pounds (haven't weighed myself in a week).

I am a pretty small gal and I still didn't really "show" with my first until around 7 months. Then people said I looked pregnant. I had a healthy 7lb, 14oz-er at the end there, though

Now I'm on baby #5 and I'm showing already at 9 weeks

Yeah -- I'm pretty sure any time I feel anything, it is pretty much hot air! Have to say, I never examined my gut enough pre-preg to really know how much I stick out! ha ha... there isn't much, but i was a almost but not exactly flat tummy. Healthy, i like to think! It's a good thing I was not too skinny due to losing so much weight these past weeks. I am weighting/waiting (ha ha) for the needle on the scale to start going back up!
It seems there's no rhyme or reason about which foods make me feel bloated and which seem to settle. It's so aggravating -- feels like the food is just sitting in there going no where! I keep pushing the band of my pants down to avoid that cramped feeling more than anything I suspect -- just like you said Kamalynsky. oh well!
Finally feel less nauseated around the clock. For me that is enough cause to celebrate for now!

ALSO -- GREAT NEWS -- I broke down and ate some raw cheese (formerly a big no no as I have been super sensitive to dairy for about a year now?) cuz i wanted it so very badly and it caused absolutely NO GI issues!! Oh am SOOO thrilled!!! more food I can eat and it's sooooo yummy!!!! Oh how I have missed cheese!

i was pretty anxious to start showing the first time around too...now i am honestly a bit horrified at my reflection some days! i don't know why some days i am bigger than others but i know others are experiencing it too. i find myself staring at my belly profile in the mirror quite a few times a day...

actually, when i was 5 weeks pregnant we told this couple we know that owns a skate shop in a town we were stopping in and the wife was like wow! so you're what, 2-3 months now? based on my belly. i was shocked! haha
