All of the sudden my nails have become very brittle and are breaking. My thumb nail broke so far down that it really hurts. What do you think I am low in...I have been suspecting I need to up my Calcium and Magnesium intake...what else should I add? Its not like I have long nails or anything but, when they are breaking and becoming so thin and bad it worries me that I am not getting something I need.

Thanks, Megan

You could try taking biotin and silica, and maybe fish oils? Those helped strengthen my nails and hair when I took them a few years back. Do you eat lots of protein and good fats?

So weird...I posted a reply yesterday to this but it didn't show up? Oh well.

I do eat a lot of good fats, oils, etc. so it is strange that they would be breaking so bad all of the sudden. How would I go about adding biotin and silica into my diet?

Thanks!

I just took 'em in tablet form. You can get "skin, nails and hair" vitamins with a combination of stuff. I have a vague feeling that brittle nails is a symptom of some other kind of deficiency, but I can't remember what! Does your MW know about it?

I haven't talked to my MW about it yet...I plan to do so at my next appt. Its strange because I am noticing thin lines in them now and little vertical cracks.

I just decided to look it up and it also says that Iron can be the cause. I have been very anemic and I just started taking the additional Iron so maybe this will help improve the nails.

Iron, that's it! Hmm, mine have been bendier than usual recently and I'm deficient. Just started the prescription supplements, so it'll be interesting to see if it makes a difference. :)
