DS watches kids use those skimmer boards at the beach -- the ones where you throw them down, then hop on and ride. How old do kids have to be to be successful using them? DS is fairly athletic (can ride a bike and throws, catches, bats well), but I don't want to spend the money on one if he's too young.
thanks,

We bought one for our kids when they were about seven. The still have them and they are 16 now.

Chris did fine at age 7. But my daughter lost interest immediately. (wasted $30) Chris lost interest at about age 14. So, he got a good seven years out of it. We live five hours from a beach, so it was one or two trips a year.

Does he have the softer boogie board? Once he can do that he's probably ready to move up to the skim board. We were at the beach with friends last weekend, and their DS, 4 is a really good boogie boarder! We were all pretty impressed. He's also a very strong swimmer, and we all live at the beach, so lots of time to play and practice.

DD is 6 and can't go more than a foot or two on the skimmer board. She has really good balance (based on her ability on a scooter and at gymnastics on the balance beam). She enjoys it even though she can't go very far!

Can you ask one of the other kids sometime if DS can try their board for a minute? Then you can figure out if it is worth the $$.
