My DD just turned 5 in November and is in Kindergarten this year. I don't know at what age most kids acquire this skill, but I feel like I'm going to be wiping her butt when she's in college. No, but seriously, how do you get a 5 year old to do this? She knows "how", she is just "scared to get poop on her hands". It's gotten challenging with a newborn in the house, many times she has to go poo right when I begin nursing him. I tell her to try it herself, I can't. She refuses. If she does "try", it's not really a try but rather her patting the TP on the outside of her bum and pouting. Also, I know she has held it at school before so she didn't have to wipe. I'm at my wits end!!

Get the wet wipes! "Kandoo" is one brand.

Maybe try some family cloth? My DD1 (3.5) doesn't like to wipe with paper because her hand sometimes gets wet, but never minds using the washcloths we use for the same purpose.

don't have any useful tips really, but my DS (who will be 6 in April) has just started sorting himself out on his own in the last couple of weeks. Up until now he has refused to do this. There was a short interim stage when he would wipe himself and then I would check him - but that was only a couple of months ago. So perhaps things will change as she gets older. I think maybe DS is getting to the point where he likes a bit of privacy. We have a new baby in the house too (well 9 months now!) so I understand the frustration of just sitting down to nurse and then having to stop, go upstairs and wipe!

sometimes its more than wiping.

my dd is 7 and i still help her with it.

however she has the wet wipes and uses it at her dad's. but i know she was having a problem with actual reaching adn doing it well so her dad got her a bidet.

dd is a perfectionist and feels she still does not do a good job. usually she goes when we are out and i dont have the wipes. most of the time she is correct.

one of these days she is going to stop. so i dont mind doing it yet.

I second the wet wipes but don't get kandoo if you have septic system and pumps - they may be flushable, but do not break up and block the pumps. Worked out very expensive.

Thanks for the tip...I have the Kandoo and the Huggies Clean Team. We do not have a septic system...but my parents do and that is what we use there for DS

My ds is almost 7 and still won't wipe his own bum. It's frustrating.

My DD1 was still asking me to wipe her when she was that age. The Kandoo and Huggie's flushable wipes came in very handy for getting her to wipe herself. She's 7.5 and wipes herself now, though she doesn't do the greatest job and I notice a lot of dirty underpants on laundry day.

Her sister, age 4, has been wiping herself almost as long as she's been out of diapers!! What a difference!
