I am posting this in two places because I want to know what is the normal/abnormal time for a 7 year old girl to fall asleep.

I was told today by a pediatric neurologist that I should try melatonin for my DD.

She has a hard time falling asleep even when she is tired. She stays awake in bed either thinking or reading until about 9:30 every night and sleeps for about 10 hours. I am not overly concerned with this, but the dr. wants me to give her melatonin every night. She thinks that she might not be getting enough sleep and it could be contributing to SPD, and anxiety symptoms.

I know that melatonin is natural, but it also has side effects and I don't want to give her anything unless I'm sure she is not getting enough sleep.

It doesn't sound too bad to me, but there is a big range of normal. Did the dr. say why she thinks that sleep is the problem?

 

We've gone the melatonin route with our 3 year old, for many of the same reasons you listed, and it has been a positive experience. But trust your instincts, for sure. Ten hours sounds great to me, but my kid was only getting 7-8 without melatonin.

My daughter is the same way (so am I.)

Is it her anxiety keeping her up? My constant thought process is what keeps me awake.

Is she getting a lot of exercise to wear her down?

10 hours is in the range of normal.

The dr. said she would like us to find out if her anxiety could be due to not being well rested.

I don't think so though. I wish it could be that easy. She is pretty consistent with 10 hours of sleep and stays asleep all night.
