And also, when did climbing trees, riding bikes, rollerskating and skateboarding become dangerous? Seriously?! That's ridiculous! Maybe if kids weren't wrapped in cotton wool constantly they would learn their limits and learn to assess risks.

HMM - I don't know if it's a reason that kids do stupid things?  That is probably just a development/maturity thing.

And I agree that the above activities should not be considered dangerous - though could be depending on what you are doing on your bike, board, skiis etc.

Assessing the risk - after researching the topic - is why as a parent I won't have a trampoline.

Yes, just go with trampoline. Same as any other sports but with more fun. As someone said, rules must be known and children, especially younger, should be under supervision. Also, no more than 1 child at a time as 75% of all accidents on trampolines happen because there were multiple jumpers.

I'm thinking that when it comes to childhood safety, we all have our sensitivities. I can understand both sides of the issue. Our family just so happens to have started to research some of these issues as we are an outdoorsy family looking to build the best backyard space that we can for family fun and hospitality towards our extended family and friends.

I found the discussion here quite valuable.
