I have two boys - 8 and 6. The 8 year old has learning disabilities - in the language department. He has many outbursts - they surround when he doesn't get his own way, when he gets disciplined, or when he doesnt understand something. He goes from happy to mad in 0 seconds. I know some of it has to do with his ld but others I don't know - mood disorder? I probably should be looking at his diet and starting there. Like I said wits end and today it seems to be one of those days. It effects the whole family - for instance my DH and I are at each other as well - not so much in front of the kids but just not happy - I think we are both overwhelmed! My youngest has t1 diabetes which also consumes a lot of time. We try and make sure that we balance attention to both, but at times its hard. I feel like I need a whole family makeover. Everything that I planned to do as a parent seems to have flown out the window and feel like we are barely getting by as a family. Today we went to the zoo. It was quite busy. Instead of leaving as a happy family he was miserable. I am looking for some advice, inspiration and perhaps some reassurance that I am not alone, haven't failed and things could improve. Thanks : (
Big hug from me because I can really relate. I have a 9 year with dyslexia, SPD and anxiety issues, she is prone to explosive outbursts or meltdowns. My 5 year old has severe asthma and is in general just a very sensitive child. We planned for a 3rd and I got pregnant literally when DD1 was taking her worst downward spiral, of course. That got us our DS1 who is almost 3 and speech delayed, and then because we obviously didn't have enough going on we got a bonus baby! Hello DS2 who is Mr. Crabby Pants, he hates everything and everyone. Oh the curve balls life loves to throw at you. Balanced and fair, this family is not. I spent attention to basically whatever child is screaming the loudest at that very second. The quieter ones get left behind at times. We spent our days just surviving. And like you, this isn't what I thought I'd be doing every dingle day, putting out fires all day long.
Anyway, just a friendly shout that no you are not alone. Do you have any local support? That is my saving grace, I have a good friend with several challenging children as well. Once a month we have a lunch or dinner out with a drink and basically have a gripe fest, it feels so good just to release on someone that gets it and is not going to judge me.
thanks Peony, not really any good support yet. Yes for my son with diabetes but noone really understands my other as he is pretty good when he is at school or in other settings like that but get him home and he releases! other than the zoo today, he hates anything "new" like that....he also mentioned that he didn't like all the people today which he has never had a problem with before.
Being a mom is the most difficult job there is! Chkpea, you obviously have a lot of challenges in your family, but you are also a very insightful and intelligent woman. Sometimes just getting through the day in one piece is a success that should be celebrated :) Each family is unique...don't compare yourself to others. For you, just GETTING to the zoo is a great success! Even if your son left feeling miserable, I guarantee that he did enjoy some parts of the excursion. And, what a great mom you are to venture out with your children and give them experiences to learn and explore. Give yourself the credit you deserve and celebrate your family's unique success. Hang in there Chkpea!!!!! Your children and lucky to have you as their mom :)
