I need a present for 9 year old.  We hang out several times a year, but they moved to another state a couple of years ago so not nearly as much as we used to.  She is kind of like an older, out-of-state cousin to my ds.  She has read all the Harry Potter books and loved them.  She enjoys reading, but I have no idea what she has read (because we don't see her on a regular basis).

I am crafty and would happily make something for her.

I just need ideas!

How about a magazine subscription? National Geographic and Highlights have fun articles that my dd (9) loves. Legos are still a big hit, animal purses, art supplies, and The Sisters Grimm books.

A good gift might be a great book bag, homemade bookmarks, and a reading light.  There are some great books out there that she may not have read yet such as the Grace Lin books for kids,  The Greene Knowe books, which are magical and intriguing as well as the Cornelia Funke books.  Can you ask her what she has read?

She might be ready for The Gaia Girls :-)

I love the amazing amount of great books out there for kids!   Hope this helps!

My children are only 8, but they love any type of art supplies.

You could put together a few items and even if she has them, she can use them when she runs out.

I'm not sure how much you want to spend but a small potholder type loom or a lap loom are also nice and many children do not have them.  My children love them so we bought some for my niece and nephew (9 & 12) and they also like using them.  With the little potholder square they've made pot holders, coasters, scissor holders, etc.  It allows them to make useful gifts for others too.

How about a gift card to a local book store - I know not everyone uses amazon or is near a barnes and noble.  My 'reader' LOVES gift cards to both new book stores and used stores.  This year he made the switch to good quality art supplies as well.  Basically going from crayola to high end artist type stuff.  So anytime people want to send art store gift cards so $25 colored pencils I'm happy to take them up on the offer ;). You might want to check with mom and see whats needed that can be packaged as a fun item!

i would do both. if i could. i think a gift card to a book store is a GREAT idea.

plus you could make her something. i know my 9 year old is appreciating 'beauty' finally. if you crochet/knitted a cute top for her she would love it. or if you made her a voodoo doll like this one or even felt anime dolls like this one she would love it. i am not sure what craft you are going to make.

the point is she should enjoy pretty and cute stuff so anything that falls into that category should be appreciated.

a purse

or even a satin pillow case with some work on it or lace edges.

if she liked HP she might also enjoy fablehaven series, Leven thumps series (Obert skye).
