Easy Strategies for 5 year old in dealing with peers

My DD is 5 years old and all of her best friends at school are boys. Last night she was upset and told me that when they play Transformers at recess that they always make her be the “Girl Robot” but she wanted to be another character. The boys told her that she couldn’t be that other one character because she was a girl.
We don’t really believe in gender stereotypes but yes my girl wears girl clothes and my boy wears boy clothes but that pretty much it and this is not force we let the older one pick out her clothes.
One of our saying in “there is no such things as girls things or boy things “
What other things could she say to her peers? Do I tell her not to play with them unless they play fairly?

Thoughts or ideas

Maybe a reply of "you can't tell me what to be" would be sufficient.

She could try "We're just pretending anyway so it doesn't matter who I pretend to be"

Or maybe she can start up a similar game with a different group. Most kids are fairly easy to enrol in a game of pretend if you invite them.
