Anyone have a child who stutters? Looking for hope/inspiration/stories of how you deal with it. Our 8yo ds is a severe stutterer. It has gotten progressively worse and now he even stutters when he reads out loud. He just completed an intensive evaluation at a stuttering clinic where he was recommended for therapy. He will be getting a full auditory exam as well as there were some concerns during the brief check he had at the clinic.
Has anyone dealt with therapy for stuttering? I've heard the prognosis is not generally good, although there are many people who learn to cope with stuttering and keep it under control. We don't know anyone else with a child who stutters - he is the only one in the school, so we don't have much of a support network.
Thankfully he has not been teased too much about it at school although there are a couple of kids who give him a little bit of a hard time about it. It has affected his willingness to participate in class though for obvious reasons, which affects his grades a bit. The teachers have been understanding and got him to agree to participate one time per class.
Thanks for any info or stories you can share!
