DD took 2 classes at the Y this past semester(?) Are they called semesters? anyway I was kinda disappointed in the teachers.
DD's crafts class was all young 3 year olds. (I stayed in the class b/c DD didn't want me to leave but I kept my mouth shut and didn't interfere at all. )
Often the projects involved sticking those foam shapes on whatever and most of the kids had trouble peeling the backs off. they made puppy puppets and the teacher had to practically make each puppet for every kid b/c ears had to go in certain places or they were using too much glue or not enough colors. this kind of thing went on with almost every project except for coloring where DD was often reminded not to just scribble. Unforutnately my DD isn't very adept at coloring A circle here and there but that's it mostly it is scribbles. She does tell you that her scribbles are pictures of things. Like one time the teacher kept saying "Don't just scribble" but the teacher was not hearing DD saying, "It's a rainbow" Now the teacher wasn't mean to the kids but I felt she was often hurrying DD along. DD is very poky and always things slowly. I wouldn't care if her project didn't look one bit like a dog or a snowman but it seemd very importnat the kids get the projects, "just right". Is it the crafts teacher's job to make sure the crafts are right? It just kinda bugged me. It is not something I would report or call the Y about. I am just thinking it would have been nice to let the kids work at thier own pace and make their own pictures and perhaps the projects were too hard for 3 yearolds. Would this bug you?
BTW the Y is our first forray into structured classes so maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about.

As for DD's dance teacher I did call the Y about her. she was scolding the kids and shaming them with things like, "you are being very bad!" "Noone can dance b/c of you!" "Get over here!" None of these things were ever directed at my kid b/c the dance teacher did not yell at the kids whose moms were in the room. She did have an assistant who was wonderful with the kids and could get them all to dance without scolding them. When I called, the director said, "I am so soruprised her specialty is small children" I should have asked if she had an actual degree or just the fact that she has 4 kids (something she loved to throw out during class to the moms watching) Anyway do you think the Y requires any actual degrees to teach there?

I would just call and ask, they won't know its you calling. Just act like youre intrested in their programs and what kind of certification the teachers have, or special degrees? Play like you have no clue how it works..

I was not happy with the quality of teaching in the two classes my ds took, ages 3 and 4, at the local Y. I think in general teaching is a skill a lot of people undervalue and don't understand just how skilled and experienced a person has to be to teach well, so they hire just about anyone who is willing to do it. The swimming class my son took was taught by very young adults/older teenagers, and while they were fairly patient and kind, they clearly weren't trained in some basics of teaching. Some kids spent the majority of the time sitting on the edge of the pool and were ignored. In the tumbling class the teacher barked at the kids and in fact I got angry and pulled ds out early. THey made a big deal about not letting the parents watch, too. So I did not renew our family membership this year which is too bad as I always thought Ys are a good idea and should be supported.

well, there is pressure on the teacher from the other angle- parents complaining that they do not pay for their kids to do whatever they want, without structure, creating something that the parents don't see as anything ''I could give him a brown paper bag and crayons at home....'' stuff. While I completely agree with you, you have to remember that our ideals about self expression and patience with the child is still out of mainstream and the teacher is probably trying to cater to the vast majority of the parents.
