I'm thinking about getting a rolled hem foot for my machine, but I think I need to know more about them first. Is this what I should use for a gently curved hem (like the bottom of a skirt)? I've seen the tutorials that do a couple lines of stitching and turning it under twice and pressing. Would a rolled hem foot eliminate all those steps? Can I use this foot for anything that I would normal turn under and press? It seems to be for narrow hems; aren't most hems narrow?

Yes - you can use it on gently curved or straight seams. I think they come in different widths - 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch.

I've found the smaller width VERY difficult to get the hang of. I can kind of use it if I zig zag but not so much with a straight stitch. I just can't seem to get in there. On the other hand, I have no trouble anymore just turning a narrow hem (Not 1/8 inch narrow, but quarter inch for sure) and seaming. I don't fold twice and iron, I can just do it on the machine.

A friend of mine did master the rolled hem foot by practicing straight seams and making lots of napkins. Just something to think about.

Third generation WOHM. I work by choice.

I love my rolled hem foot. A narrow hem with a foot like this is really really narrow. I don't think I could possibly press and turn such a tiny hem but the foot makes it very easy.

It is also great for hemming net and very fine fabrics which might melt if you ironed them.
