Which would you get first for casual sewing? What's the actual difference? I've decided that part of why I haven't made dd a dozen little dresses is that I detest and suck at basting-style gathering.

The ruffler. No contest. Once you have worked out how to use it you'll be looking for all kinds of gathered up stuff to sew.

IME the ruffler gives much more obvious results than the gathering foot.
