I bought some unfinished wood blocks for my DS, and I want to color them now. Anyone have any suggestions for a safe, non-toxic way to do this? A brand of paint, or dye? He is 8 mo (about) so everything goes in his mouth right now.

I know people use Kool-aid to dye yarn... would this be an option for wood, or would it rub off on things?

Somewhere on here there's a link to a site that tried several different dyes-koolaid came off easily. I used watercolor and then sealed it with beeswax. Non-toxic acrylics work, too.

Homemade milk paint finished with myland's wax or pure tung oil (not a toxic blend!) might work. I made my milk paint with nonfat dry milk powder, lime, oxide pigments, and water.

ETA Myland's actually has a color wax that might work, one step in that case.
