Well, I just "inheritted" a serger from my friend ... it's not anywhere near new, but I'm totally excited. But, I'm having a big problem and can't figure it out. I start to serge and the lower loop thread keeps breaking/getting broke and I don't know why. I was hoping someone here might have some good trouble shooting ideas. (I can't ask my friend because she doesn't use a serger - it was a hand-me-down form her mil and doesn't really know anything about it.) BTW, it's a Companion SergeMate 5040. I've read through the manual but can't find much help. I really want to have fun here ... oh, and it didn't happen the first time I used it. I first made a very interesting wash cloth out of single layer flannel, then tried two layers (flannel & terry) and started having problems. Now it won't work with any material. :

I am very new at the serging thing, but hopefully I can help a little. My lower looper thread kept breaking and I figured out it was because I had the looper part thread wrong. I had the end of the thread going around back of where the upper looper is attached and then over to the left side under the pressure foot, but it is supposed to go in front of the upper looper holder thing.

LMAO! That was the worst description ever! Maybe you could find a video of one of the newer models of your machine and see if it helps any.

Even if you have it threaded it correctly, you have to thread it in the correct order. You begin with the lower looper, then the upper looper, then the needle threads. If the needle threads are done correctly, you can take them out of the needles and then re-do the lower loopers (in the correct order). Believe me...I learned this the hard way!
