Try The Knitting Studio in Phoenixville, look for any bulky yarn. The lady who owns the place is super sweet, and will help you find something appropriate.

Duh, shoulda thought of this before The Waldorf school also has a little bookstore/gift shop that carries a lot of the art materials for the kinds of projects that they do at the school. You can call down there and ask if they carry it. If they do, it would be the exact yarn your friend's son used before. Do call first, because they keep really wierd, short hours.
