So I bought some pretty yarn in variegated dark green, dark blue and goldish yellow. I knit up a waistband (making shorts) and the colors looked beautiful! But once I switched to the stockinette (kitr) I"m getting weird striping. I have vertical bands of green alternating with blue/yellow horizontal stripes.
I hate the patterning!! But what can I do short of starting a new ball of yarn and alternating rows. Should I tear it out and make a different size, and hope the pattern is different?
I second pulling it out. Knitting it up in a different size may still give you some other weird patterning.
As an aside, that's why I usually hate multi-coloured yarns. They look fine knit up for part of my project, but the minute I switch stitch patterns or add shaping, the colour pattern ends up looking weird. :

I would probably just keep going on it. I have done that many a time, thinking that I am going to have these beautiful varigated colors throughout, only to see stripes and funky patterns going on. ONe turned out looking like the Earth, so that was pretty cool. The other times... it just looked like stripes and funky patterns.
Sorry it wasn't what you were expecting. But I bet it is still purty!
Just to make you feel better, here are the ones I was talking about.
While I think this is pretty, this isn't what I had expected getting out of it. The owner seems to like them, though.
