I just made my daughter the wildest socks. I don't know where my digital is, but I'll post a pic sometime soon. Here is the pic!!

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b2...schersocks.jpg

I used the ripple sock pattern that is on Knitty- but theirs is done with a varigated yarn- I used solid white and solid black- a very delicate sock yarn and size #1 needles- and made stripes, 4 rounds per color. The pattern is for adult socks, but I got the gauge OK for my 3 year old by scaling down the yarn and needles (I didn't think I could cut out stitches because they are so integral to the pattern design)

I think these will be very fun for october fashions!

Anyway- the ripples of the pattern do something WILD with the bold horizontal stripes- it makes something almost like a checkerboard- only one vertical bar is squares, and the adjacent vertical sections are arcing rectangles- it looks like you had to change colors as you knit to make the checkered effect- but you don't- the offset happens in the decreases and increases so the only color changing is a simple yarn change every four rows.

All you need to know is a left and right decrease and a yo increase... everything else is very straightforward. It's a really fun pattern.

Love Sarah

Those are wild! I Escher. What a visionary.

What pattern did you use? I can't find it on Knitty.

Angela- Probably the reason you couldn't find them was because you could not recognise them! Here they are in varigated yarn- it's like a totally different sock. Mine are 100% this pattern- no changes at all except I switched from black to white yarn every four rows. There is just one place where I hit a glitch- it's down where the leg joins the gussets- because i wanted the little heel pad to be all black- I wound up with one skinny black row between two white stripes. someone else could have probably worked out a better way to manage it than I did- but i don't mind that spot-

love Sarah

Thanks, Sarah! I'm sending this to a friend whose husband is really into art and Escher (I just borrowed an Escher book from them, as a matter of fact) and who wants to learn to knit in the round... she's a huge nerd (like me) so I think she'll be fine cutting her teeth on these.
