My mil laid out the squares and went to the quilt store to figure backing borders, etc. This is what we came up with.

The amount of squares, even traded with the eleventh person doesn't even amount to a twin size. I alternated every other square with a square of the fabric I sent out. I think it came to 12 rows of 13, or 13 rows of 12, however you look at it, of 6 inch squares. I bought 2 fabrics @ 1 yard apiece to make 2, 6 inch borders.
The backing is two 44 inch across pieces. It came to 5 yards split for that.

Don't quote me on this, trying to figure out what we finally came up with was kinda tricky since we over estimated and bought more fabric than we needed, so I need to get the right final sizes. here is a link to the quilt so far, just missing the last pieces from Pixie.

Well, I didn't have enough floor space to lay all my squares out...so Photoshop to the rescue.

So on my knit blog...there is the layout of what I am planning....

http://knitspiral.typepad.com

I am only shooting for a twin size...but I think it will work great! Now I am gonna see what I can layout for a pillow or pillow sham....

Adina, that looks great! I have heard of quilters using Photoshop, looks like a great way to know what you need. My MIL suggested you doing the dark rows w/ dark purple yarn, and the lights w/ light purple yarn. I came up with my design at 9 pm after we cut all the fabric, but after looking at yours I guess it's back to the drawing board...

Photoshop is wonderful - I took pics of all the fabric (we are moving, there is no floor space currently) and then made a document with guidelines and pasted fabric swatches into it, moved them around until I was happy. It is a MONSTER huge document - but I love having the actual fabrics in there. It was the first time I had tried that - I think that on our desktop computer I will start a file of fabrics I have, that way when i get the need to do a quilt, I can futz with stuff I already have too.

Copy away, celeste!

pixie-n-hertwoboys~ I received your fabric! Rainbowmoon's, too! Thanks!

Now I'm trying to figure this out the back-breaking way. Laying them all out & moving them around while trying to keep the cats off. I was totally drooling over Adina's photoshop!! I came here just to show dh last night.

I'm either going to make 2 small baby/lap blankets or use the fabrics for another patchwork braid as an accent. I have the fabrics separated by ones that would look good w/moss green or deep yellow/orange... and I like that, but don't know if i want to separate them like that. Hmmmmm. Decisions, decisions!

just curious about this whole thing. It sounds incredibly fun. (I've become obsessed with fabric lately) I wanted to join but kinda figured I was too unknowledgeable to do so. Of course by the time I figured out it was just swapping unquilted/unsewn fabric it was too late... lol

So how do you cut it? squares with a rotary cutter? and how do you know exactly what type of fabric to send? 100% cotton? wal mart type? quilt store type? etc?

if I know then maybe I can get in on the next one. I'm new to sewing but I've definitely bitten by the sewing bug. I'm going to post my very cute and very useless projects once I finish them.

I cut mine with a rotary cutter on a cutting mat so I was able to get them square. I'm pretty sure we all sent 100% cotton wovens. There is usually a dedicate quilting section in fabric stores where you can find wovens.

I just joined this group just to I could ask you all if you would be willing to contribute to this purple charm quilt with me. I also recieved this chain letter and think it's a lot of fun and would like to do it but I don't know enough quilters to include. If five of you would allow me to include you on my list, I will send you the letter and two squares and you'll add your name to the list and send it forward.

I also want to do this because my quilting friend who invited me is so excited about it and I don't want to disappoint her.

Let me know. I would need your mailing address.

Thank you,
Janet
