Hi mamas! I'm looking for the homemade recipes for play-doh. Any kinds would be appreciated.

Also, what do you suggest for best storage? Do you color the "doh" and does the coloring rub off on little hands?

Thanks so much in advance!!

My usual recipie is

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1-2 tablespoons oil
1 tsp cream of tarter.
few drops of food colouring

Mix all ingredients in a pan and cook over a low heat until it turns into a dough. Kneed on a floured surface until cool.

I 've never had a problem with the colour coming off on DDs hands this way.

I store hte3 dough in the fridge, either in a plastic bag or in a lunch box. I prefer the lunch box since the bags tend to rip. We've had our current batch for a coupld of months and it's just starting to dry out.

Ooooo! Thank you mama! I never would have thought of putting it in the fridge. That's a great tip. Hopefully, we can try this out soon. Thanks again!

We keep ours in the fridge too(we use the same recipe as above), and sometimes I use a few drops of grapefruit seed extract as a preservative. It lasts forever if you keep the bag sealed. I also added a few drops of lavendar oil to the last batch and it smells so good! It's even more relaxing to play with...

peace, Beth

The recipe that I have at home is a bit different, and I've never tried it.
Here it is:

1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
3 tbsp. oil
1 pkg of Koolaid (for colour and scent)
1/2 c. water

Keep the playdough in the fridge and if it gets too sticky, after a while you just add a bit of flour to it. Keep it in an air-tight container.

Here are some that dd made while in a "little scientist" program with our local parks and recreation dept.

Silly Soft Putty
1 cup white school glue
½ cup liquid starch

Combine. Store in an airtight container.

Gluey Glob
4 ounces white school glue
1 teaspoon borax
1 cup + 4 ounces distilled water
4 drops food coloring

Combine glue with 4 ounces of water in bowl. Stir/mix.
In another bowl, combine 1 cup water, borax and food coloring. Mix well.
Combine both mixtures. It will start to gel – mix with hands until excess water is gone.
Store in covered container in refrigerator.

Cornstarch & Salt Dough
2 cups salt
2/3 cup water
1 cup cornstarch
½ cup additional water

Mix salt and 2/3 cut water. Cook on medium heat 4-5 minutes. In a bowl, mix cornstarch and ½ cup water. Cook on medium heat until thick. Cool. Will dry without crumbling and can be painted.

Playdough
1 cup flour
½ cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Few drops of food coloring

Mix dry ingredients. Add liquid ingredients. Cook over low heat until the mixture leaves the sides of the pan. Turn out on waxed paper and knead. Cool. Store in covered container.

Coffee Grounds Dough
2 cups used, dry coffee grounds
1/2 cup salt
1 ½ cup cornmeal

Mix dry ingredients together. Add enough water to moisten. Interesting texture. Fun to pat and roll.

Bubbles
2 cups liquid dish detergent
6 cups water
¾ cup wate corn syrup

Combine, store in covered container

Puff Paint
1 cup water
1 cup salt
1 cup flour
1-2 tablespoons powdered tempera paint
