I just started my first "real" sock using silver's tutorial. (I'd done one of these before) I'm using Plymouth Sockotta. Not worsted, but I'd like to KAL with you all!

Well, this *might* be it; figures, at 3am... I've just realized that the cable pattern I developed for my STR yarn will be too complex for this labor, lol, so I copied the Sock class pattern & grabbed my worsted & tossed it in a bag. Maybe these will be my labor socks?

I'm using a light gray Paton's Classic Merino. I'll probably slip a cable or two down the sides, just for fun, but other than that it will be just like the pattern.

I got my sock yarn yesterday in the mail. I ran out and bought some size 1 needles (not sure what size I would need). I then visited the silver's sock class yesterday to see that she recommends and it was size 2 or three. I had size 3 and cast on last night. It's going well, although there are spaces in the stitches, so I am thinking too big needles for this size yarn??

I can post a pick if you need to see what I am talking about.

Thanks for your help!

What does the skein of yarn recommend? If you bought "real" sock yarn, you probably want to use 1's. The idea is to use smaller needles to knit socks than you would, say, a sweater because you want a denser fabric that will hold up better to the abuse a sock takes. The Silvers pattern might be recommending 3's to save you from becoming disheartened. 1's are little.

I totally get what you mean.

The yarn was bought from Etsy, it's 100% superwash Merino Wool, 4 ounces / 550 yards. Oh, okay, I'm reading it now. It says 32-34 stitches to 4 inches on US #0-2 needles.

So, I'm thinking start over on the ones, huh? I want to do it right, even it if takes a while.

Kudos to the person here already done with one sock in a day!! wow!

thanks!

Yeah, 1's are little but I don't like the result of using 3's with true sock weight yarn. My first sock (I say sock and not pair, because I have *yet* to make the match... months later) was sock weight on 3's and It's just too thin for my liking.

Harder to knit imo,as well. really slippy otn.

I may join you all later, I want to cast on for a pair of toe up socks for ds. Just have to finish my swapping longies first!
Well I *should* make some covers for this babe that's cooking. I just rcved my IBK from the coop and it's calling my name.

I can always have more that one project otn right?

What a cutie, Lila! I cast on my socks today & they're going nicely. I decided to put a twist in every other knit rib, just for a little fun. So my pattern is k2, p2, knit 2nd stitch on left needle, then 1st stitch on left needle, then slide both off left needle, p2. I only do the twist every other row. Maybe these will be my "labor socks."

Well, on & off -- depending on the kind of labor, you know? I vividly remember my mom & her two midwives at the dining room table sorting 3 laundry baskets full of mismatched socks while she was in labor with my youngest sister...

And all this prodomal labor makes it difficult to really concentrate on any specific thing (like more intricate projects), and physical activity is pretty much out, so... knitting it is! I'm almost/about 1/2 way done with a baby sweater, too.

Yay! I am knitting all the time right now, I have a feeling once Bodhi arrives I will have much less knitting time for a while...

I really want to make it over to practice spinning, but I just don't know when, yet.

Sorry, that entire post was way OT!

Um, I have yet to co my toe ups, there that was something RE socks...

Well, I'm about 4 inches into my first sock, and labor only progresses when I stand up. Otherwise it slows to every 1/2 hour for decent contractions. Lost some mucus plug, though (gee, what a subject at lunchtime ).

Lila -- housekeeping?? Wassat? Just kidding; I actually think I'll do a (very) little bit of that in a few minutes. I have best friend from high school's mom is going to be in town so will be stopping by today -- haven't seen her in a year or two & she's never been to a house of mine since college days... : I'm feeling kinda slovenly...maybe I could brush my hair & put on a bra or somethin...

You sound just like me and I'm not preggers anymore. When someone's stopping in, you should see me haul it to put away dishes & unfolded laundry and try to tidy myself up, too. It's a sight to behold.
Rabbit trails, anyone?

Wow! I just found this thread and I really really want to try socks! Except that I have 3 bazillion projects OTN - do I dare?

I even have gorgeous sock yarn from Mystical Creations waiting for me.... or maybe I could dredge up some worsted from the stash.....

Let me see how I feel this weekend and maybe I'll join in.

OT - RM, just how do you find time to knit, run and be a mommy???!!! I find that my knitting suffers when I try to run more, my running suffers when I'm knitting more, and it all goes to heck when one of us gets sick around here!

Gorgeous! I love the color pooling in those 2 spots -- fun! Mine are plain heather gray (stashbuster). I've turned the heel & finished the gusset on my first sock -- I have about 1/2 the length of my foot left.

Chamamama~ I'll most likely be the last one done with these socks, even with nothing else OTN. I get up at 5:15am to run and get in the shower before the kids get up. If I don't run then, it doesn't get done. My knitting is usually while I'm waiting in line at school to pick up or drop off ds1, and it's usually only 5 minutes or so. I also squeeze some in on the weekends after the kids are in bed. Dh and I like to watch a movie together and that's prime knittin' time for me. Being a mommy is all the rest of the time. I know what you mean about being sick, I dont' know if you have read along on the running thread, but we have had a real go of it here the last two weeks. it's getting better now though.

Good to see you here, you starting some socks with us?? love to see the yarn you have!!

I'm trying to get time to post pics of what I have done and the yummy yarn I have.

I started my toe up socks! Just took 6 frogs and a lot of head banging. For some reason I couldn't get the cast on, the yesterday it clicked. Now I feel like my second broadripple sick will fall victim to SSS,
