I love rule #1!

I'm crossing out rows as I finish them and now that I'm on clue #2, I have markers in my knitting at a few different spots to reduce counting. I wish the chart was the kind that has every tenth line darker; I guess I could do that myself.

Which clue was your favourite? (so far)

I found that a marker after the main border yo on each end (21 stitches in from the side), a marker somewhere around the center(even though center changes) and then depending on the clue- a marker before the bands of three yo that move in a chevron pattern. Those were the main time I marked. By the third clue though, I was only really needing markers at the border edges and in the center. And I lost the center one in the 4th.

The 4th clue is fun! Its easier, and once I get to the center panel I can go on memory now, so I actually haven't (knock on wood) made any mistakes this clue at all, at all. Even though I appreciated the challenge of the first few clues (it's easier to sit and obsessively knit for hours when you are challenged every row- at least for me) I think clue 4 is my favorite so far. I have a fair bit of length to my stole and the knitting is relaxing instead of **exciting**.

OMG rule #1. Yup yup yup. I thought I was beyond that. That I could do lace and talk. 10+ min of tinking later, I knew that I was wrong.

I also really like #3. I would add: It isn't a mistake, it's a design feature! Just making sure no one mistakes it for a machine knit thing.

Exaaaactly...

Also, on clue 4, I have been able to sit with a friend or tv or something and keep up. It's a lot easier. Yesterday was a hrd day for me, and my hubby and bil took the kids the movies last night while my sil/best friend of hundred years watched Calender Girls, ate chocolate, and I got a few rows in, between the baby waking...It was bliss.:

I think I want to make one now... Is it funner to do with variegated yarn or a solid color? Should I just get some Bare from KP or something super special since it will be my first lace?

Bella Babe.. I can't believe you have me wanting to attempt this!! :

Hmm. It depends. Do you care about it being in "theme" I don't particularly. But if my theme guess is right, I totally want to knit a white or black one.

You know what? Knit it bare and dye the finished stole if you want to at that point!

Granted this week I have been so insanely busy I haven'thad much time to knit, but still....

I am doing the pattern as written. Since I am short, but like a fairly long sweeping wrap, I think it should work perfectly.

(And yet I have a sneaking suspicion that I may do what I *always* do and gift this dang it...) I'm so nice.

I'm doing it. I like asymmetry, I don't have enough yarn most likely to make a symmetrical stole, and I like short rows!
Plus I want to see what it looks like.

Weird though. I *wanted* it to be Persephone and didn't love the color for that. but the color is perfect for Swan Lake!

Oh my goodness I LOVE this!!!!! My first attempt at lace knitting and (since I haven't made any mistakes..) I don't know that I'll ever go back to anything else! I keep drooling over lace yarn everywhere, and I'm only 34 rows in to the Mystery Stole!!

One question.. how do you put in a "lifeline" and how would I do that? :

It's fun isn't it? I am slowing down a bit on right now... Other projects (and my kids, my hubby, my job, lol) are calling me but its cool. I am about 2/3 finished with clue 5 so not too bad.

Inserting a lifeline can save you life! Or, at least the life of your lace...

I use a length of hempathy, because it's what I had on hand that works well, but any smooth cotton (I would use a lightweight so you aren't browbeating worsted weight through your lace stitches!) yarn will do. A lot of lace knitters use cotton crochet thread.

Thread your needle with said smooth cotton yarn, run the needle and yarn through all the stitches on the
working needle. (working with circulars is sooo nice for this part bc the cables are so thin!) leave the stitches on both your needle and the lifeline. Work on!

I haven't had to rip back at all, and I am not working with a particularly slippery yarn, so I have been using lifelines at the end of each clue. The one at the end of clue 4 is really helpful right now as we are working short rows! As soon as I P back to the lifeline, it's time to P2tog and turn.

And, ok, are you with me on the joys of knitting on a budget!!!!???? Lace knitting rules! This yarn you dyed for me, if I am not mistaken, cost 3.99 for 880 yds at KP.com, correct?

And I am getting um, months of knitting out of it. Woot.

Oh yes!! Unfortunately I have $2 and some change in my bank account, so all I can do is drool, lol! I'm hoping my patience will last long enough for me to finish this, because it's going to be amazing!

Yep, the yarn I dyed for you was the 3.99 from Knitpicks. I'm so glad you like it... and I feel soooo bad about breaking it so many times.

Actually it's not been bad! I had a lot of little knots in the first clue and a half maybe? And since then there hasn't been any. I remember when I first wound the ball from the MBOY thinking how in the hell did you even get this wound up? I was quite impressed that it survived the process with as little knots as it had. I would have possibly, maybe, given up...

I was doing pretty good with wrapping that ball until the yarn came off the laundry basket I was using to keep it from knotting.... then I was screwed.

Are you putting beads on yours? And how do you block it.. do you need to block it while you go? It's really weird for me to have so many questions about knitting, and it's exciting at the same time. I feel like I'm in a whole new world (like in Aladdin!!)

I had originally thought I'd knit it just as melanie designed it. But, now I've decided to make mine short, but I am still going to do the wing. It will be interesting... It's for my mom, who is pretty conservative, but as long as it keeps her warm, I don't think she'll mind if it is asymmetrical.

Ack! So I snuck a peak at a finished stole. I don't like it! I don't want a wing afterall. Neither do I want to start from the beginning and join the two halves. Is it possible in lace to work backwards to the beginning i.e from row 300 to 1?

hey -- you can do whatever you want! i like your idea, but remember that anything directional would have to be reversed if you wanted it to look the same on both ends (especially the beginning).

Melanie was going to design a scroll insert to add into the center as a third option. ... did she do that?

I am on "no emails" on the group - it is far too overwhelming for me. I tried to search to see if others have done a symmetrical stole without grafting and found a few options but haven't had time to figure out what I want to do. I need to get onto though, or else this may turn into another UFO.

I don't mind the asymmetry of the stole, its just that it looks like two different stoles joined together.

What do the rest of you think of the finished item?

Anyone done? Mine is dragging out FOOOREEEEVEEEEERRRR. I tried to knit it symmetrical in one piece but its not working out. I don't care - it'll still be warm. I just want it done. I don't have much time to work on it right now. I keep setting deadlines for myself but they keep slipping by...
