I'm happy to know that it's not only my DH who calls them Coffee Condoms.

These on Etsy are knit:

Although, I think the technical name for them is a "coffee sleeve". If you google coffee sleeve, you should get some responses.

Knit seems like it would be good because it would stretch to fit different sized cups. Hmm..

Here's a coffee sleeve pattern on Mag Knits:

Thanks for reminding me, I've been meaning to make some of these! I think they will make lovely little stocking stuffers.

A lady comes into my shop everyday with one of those. I've seen the pattern on magknits too and it's awful cute (I think there is something similar on Knitty as well). She always makes a point of saying how she doesn't want to be wasteful by using her knit one instead of a disposable sleeve. Which is great and all...but I always want to ask her why she doesn't just get a reusable insulated cup? : She is still throwing away a paper cup and lid 5 days a week afterall.

ETA: Here's the knitty link Slingshot

That was my immediate thought when I started reading your post. Every day! Yikes. Maybe she doesn't know that you CAN use your own reusable travel mug. I honestly didn't know that you could until recently. I didn't know if they would think the sizing wouldn't be the same or something. One of my friends told me, and I'm glad she did. I would say "I thought of you the other day when I read that more and more people are bringing their own mugs to St*rbucks, how great is that? I bet your little cozy would look so cute on a travel mug."
Something along those lines would probably go over well, and then she can feel even better about reducing her waste. What do you think? I'm making them for friends and family to keep in the car/purse for when they are out and don't have a mug, but I do want to write a little note that says something cute about bringing your own mug.
