Third day home with no car and two kidlets. We're going crazy with the holiday crafts, because if I don't keep them busy, I might have to shoot myself.

We're attempting salt dough ornaments this morning, and everything's cool except that the recipe I found recommends sealing them with varnish. Err. Salt, flour, water, vegetable oil, some paint and stickers, ribbon . . . all happy hippy fairly crunchy. And then varnish???

Can you recommend anything a little less toxic to seal these with?

I haven't bothered sealing mine yet. They will be fine for this year but I doubt they will store well unsealed.

The Christmas trees which DD decorated with sequins look pretty well sealed with excess glue.

I did put them bake in the oven for an hour of so after DD painted them to make sure they were really dry, DD uses a lot of paint

I don't know if this would actually work but I wonder about using egg? Brushing egg white over them and then baking them...low temp for a bit. They wouldn't be unbreakable, but it might add that slight bit of stability?
