I have the opportunity to buy a serger. I want to get something quality, but, obviously, I want to get a good price for it. I don't have one, nor have I ever used one, so it would have to be for a beginner serger, I am however, experienced seamstress, so this serger could go on to bigger and better things in my sewing. I do own a brother sewing machine, I do like that, so another brother might be nice.
Thanks!
You didn't mention a budget, but I know you can get a brother 1034D on amazon for less than $250 shipped and it's got excellent reviews. My friend just bought one and says it's great.
I've had it for over a year now and use it weekly (at minimum). At some point I might upgrade to a different machine, but for now this one meets my needs in finishing edges and garment construction.
you could also look for a used bernina bernette 004D, 007D etc. the D indicates it has differential feed which is needed for serging knits. they are a very good solid machine that will go through anything. they are all older machines, but are made "old school" so they'll last. my aunt has had hers for well over 20 years with zero problems. she just makes sure she does regulary cleaning and maintenace to keep it running at top speed.
