Celesterra, forgive me if you've already tried this, but I might do a forum search for something like "yarn" and "longies" and maybe "favorite" or something like that. Seems to me I read a pretty long thread a while ago where people compared the various merits and drawbacks of yarns for soakers, and I learned a lot.
My personal favorite for soakers and longies is Peace Fleece, which comes in amazing colors, is really sturdy, inexpensive, absorbent, and after the first washing, is soft and lovely to handle!
I also have used and loved Full Belly Farm yarn. It's organic, amazingly soft but strong, doesn't pill at all, and has a truly beautiful ruggedness to it. A few WAHMs hand-dye the Full Belly yarn and sell it, too.
If I remember correctly, people also really love Three Irish Girls, Little Turtle Knits Farm Yarn, Henry's Attic...
I second the Hand-Painted Yarn recommendation for the little guys; I used the bulky merino for mine, and liked the absorbency. But again, once they're mobile, it doesn't hold up.
