I'm making a book for my niece (20ish pages, 1-4 sentences and a couple photos or drawings per page set), and with my crappy handwriting I'd like to do it on computer - anyone have any good suggestions for programs or resources for doing layout and printing/publishing? I could just print and cut and glue, but I'd like it to be sturdier and longer lasting than that...

It sounds very strange, but Powerpoint might work for your purposes. A picture with a caption or sentence next to or under it. Then you can just print it out one slide to a page.

There is an open source/free powerpoint knock off in the OpenOffice suite, called Impress. Try checking that out, perhaps?
