I was too proud of this not to share, and to give ideas to anyone who wants to make dollhouse furniture instead of buying it!

Here's what I've been working on the past month or so...DD got a dollhouse (Plan Toys) for her birthday and DH and I thought we'd rather make the furniture than buy it. So he's been cutting (we bought craft wood at Hobby Lobby), I've been sanding, and sewing, and having lots of happy fun...

Everything (furniture, food, bedding, dishes, highchair, crib, pillows, etc) is our creation EXCEPT the kitchen sink, stove, fridge and island, the bathroom stuff (we made the cabinet, trash bin, TP and the rugs), and the little lamp. Everything else has been a labor of love. : Hope you like it! Oh yeah - and the people were purchased "blanks". I had to paint and clothe them (and wrap their limbs with fabric - they were icky twine stuff). The little boy is naked on the bottom half though, and has one leg not yet wrapped - I ran out of time! (Oh well, he looks like DD's brother on a daily basis. Clothed on the top, nekked on the bottom. )

Of course, all the drawers really open. That was the most fun part of all of it.

O - M - G

I want to live in this house.

You have totally inspired me. I have the same Plan Toys dollhouse, which I love. I have the furniture too, but I hate the cushions that came with my furniture. Now I am going to make some that I like. One question... What did you use for the filling in your pillows and such?

andreac 07-15-2008 12:08 AM

Wow!!! What a wonderful and special gift!

The cushions are just fabric folded over cotton batting - that's the stuff you put in quilts, right? I think that's what it's called (batting). And it's definitely NOT the icky batting (polyester?) but the real cotton stuff.

I used three "sheets" of batting for the cushions, four for the pillows on the backs of the chairs/sofas, and four for the mattresses. I folded the fabric over the batting, glued it with some Liquid Stitch , then lightly glued (with the same stuff) to the furniture.

That is the most fabulous, creative, awesome thing I have seen in a long time. You are so talented and I'm uber jealous. I have the same dollhouse, but have been buying furniture sets. I've been wanting to make some, but I would never have put together things the wa you have. And you have paid attention to the details. So wonderful.

How did you make the little foodies? The salad and the hamburgers? And what did you use to color the bowls/plates (they look like ones I've seen unfinished)?

jocelyndale 07-15-2008 04:16 PM

So awesome!

Keep an eye at crafty shops (often in touristy areas or nice artsy towns) for small woven/loomed fabric samples, often sold as coasters. They make perfect throw rugs. Sometimes they're even made by the artisan's kids! (I bought rugs for my dollhouse this way when I was a kid.)

shllywlly 07-15-2008 06:22 PM

OK...WOW mama!!! You are awesome. No chance of giving the rest of us hints on the baby furniture huh? I bought my Plan Toys dolls house with all the furniture and accessories from consignment for $60. There is over $300 worth of stuff in there. The only thing missing is the nursery and high chair. I would love to make one for her.

goylesgirl 07-17-2008 01:09 PM

Definitely awesome!!! My girls are still too young to care much about furniture, but you are an inspiration for me when they get older. Where did you get your "blanks" for the dolls? I have been looking for something like that for a while.

zoomom 07-17-2008 06:26 PM

Wow that is amazing- I love it!

shakashoe 07-25-2008 07:07 AM

Thank you.

The foods are just felt. It was an easy solution.

And yes, the plates and bowls were bought. I dropped them in boiling water (just for a tiny bit so as not to warp them) to open their pores and then dyed them in a rubbing alcohol-food coloring bath, then sealed them.

AngelBee 07-27-2008 09:45 PM

WOW! That is great!

Here they are: http://www.achildsdream.com/handwork...g_supplies.htm
Scroll down, you'll see them....Took me FOREVER to find them. They are a bit taller than the Plan Toys doll house dolls so if you have that furniture set (or Ryan's Room), then they likely won't be able to fit in their beds.
