I love photography and and I'm a newbie. I've just got a new camera but don't know where to start. What sites would you suggest for someone who doesn't know where to start?? I'm reading the camera guide but it's not helping me much. Suggestions please!

I have a few friends who are midwives, doulas, hypnobirthing instructors, etc., so I could definitely get referrals to start with. How do I go about this? I'm about to sign up for the New York Institute of Photography's distance course, hoping that it will make me a bit more professional and just all around better. But I just got a 50mm f1.4, and this lense makes my photos just wow! I can see it making beautiful shots at a birth.

Any advice on how to get in the door? Free shootings, rack up good photos, and general referrals. What else?
I would LOVE to do more birth sessions! My original goal as a photographer was to do births. I did two freebies, but found people only make sure you have a good spot for the birth if it's really their priority. My advice would be to always charge something. I feel like I could have done a better job capturing the moment had it been their priority. Hindsight tells me I should have met with the midwife & assistant prior to the birth, and worked it into the birth plan.
Good luck! Keep us updated on how things go. ;0)

I am a very amateur when it comes to photography, but I plan to get more serious with it. I just need to find time to learn.

This pic was taken while on a walk (we live in a very rural area, obviously). It looks much better larger (you can see more detail).

All are manual, setting are all over the place but exif is intact if you are interested, shot with a Canon Rebel XTi and an 85mm/1.8 lens.

I just bought a DSLR a month or so ago, here's some of my new stuff. Honest opinions are wanted (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE... I want to start my own business and need to know for sure if it would be possible.)
I don't own Photoshop, so there's generally not much done editing wise to my photos, but I do want it at some point.

My little guy

My cat

Railroad bridge

Cement horse (these silly things are all over town, everyone is painted differently. This one is at the playground in one of the parks.)

Just for fun

Logan's Mommy: There's a really good blog post I just saw about going into business: http://www.debsphotographs.com/photoblog/?p=122

I'm too lazy too pull exif (and, you know, kids tend to demand attention ) - what are your settings for your photos?

Bell -- I always recommend ILP as a good photo site. It's a very courteous board and people give really great cc on photos.

I mostly just use the camera's presets, but I do have some shots of area dams that I've taken using a longer shutter time to give the effect the the water is "moving" when you look at the picture. Here is one example.

Try playing in manual - it takes some time to get used to it but in the long run you get much better pictures. For example, THIS is just a snapshot of DD but she pops because the wide aperture (2.2 as I recall) makes for a very shallow depth of field and throws all the background out of focus.

I highly recommend the book Understanding Exposure http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-...8175861&sr=8-1 Once you can really grasp metering and move to Manuel you will be amazed.

I shoot everything manually now, you can see my portfolio in my siggy.

Most of all have FUN!

I just wanted to say Hi to everyone!! It's nice to find on-line support groups for us photographers out there!! I have been shooting for about a dozen years now, but have only had my own biz for about 4 years. I absolutely love it, espec. shooting weddings, which is where my 'niche' seems to have landed. I'd be happy to help out felow photogs!!

Oh, here's my website: www.jesserie.com

Oh I love some of the more quirky, out-of-the-box images. Fantastic!

I really need to try and get out to do more *just for me* things. But I tend to shoot mostly for clients these days, and while I do try and mix it up a bit, my client work has a pretty consistant style (link in siggy)

Oh, and I am self-taught

Just wanted to share that I now have a job at a photography studio! It is really exciting. I am doing editing/retouching, and hopefully will be sent out on shoots in the not so distant future. I'm doing lots of shoots on my own, I met/shot for The Birthday Massacre last night, if anyone is familiar with them...they put on a great show and they're THE nicest band I've ever met. I'm also collecting props lately to get into the newborn/children's photography thing...I really want to do that and have some subjects lined up for me to practice with.

Here is a little preview of some photos from my shoot last night...
