I live in Palm Harbor and am new to the area. I'm having a hard time finding a ped that is okay with non-vax/alternative vax friendly, bf'ing friendly and very important - okay with DS being intact. (oh yeah and that takes my Tricare Prime insurance!).

When we were first stationed here, we were seen by Dr. Amy Ryan at St. Pete Pediatrics. It is way too far from us and we weren't impressed at all.

Today we went to see Dr. Kim Odom (Myrtle Ave Peds in Oldsmar) for a 2 yr wbv and it was horrible.

She doesn't know anything about bf'ing, was not happy and voiced it quite loudly about our decisions to delay or not to some vaxes. We got in a quite heated discussion about how my son is not weighing enough (he is the 25%) because how could he possibly be getting any milk from me since I'm pregnant. Never mind the fact, that he eats all the time and is just a very active toddler. It was horrible and I left in tears.

Her staff was at the Natural Birth & Baby expo so I was really surprised how she was when I was told that they were bf'ing/intact/alternative vax schedule friendly.

Dr. Jackson does not take my insurance neither does Dr. Vaughn in Largo.

Can anyone else help me out? I'm at my wit's end. DS has to be seen by a ped, since he clubfoot and we need to keep our referrals going via our PCM. I'm so frustrated about all of this.

Thanks for reading this long post and I hope someone out there can help me out!

I would seek out a pediatric orthopedic specialist rather than fight the uphill battle with generic pediatricians. Unfortunately we don't have a lot to choose from in this area.

There's Dr. Berger in North Tampa, but he doesn't take any insurance. I wouldn't cross the street to see Dr. Jackson (scientologist).

My son goes to Dr. Hicks at Clearwater Pediatrics. We've only seen her once (last year) and she was great about my non-vaxing choice. I don't vax at all. She seemed very down to earth, great with my kiddo, and friendly. The practice is on Drew street in Clearwater between US 19 and Belcher. My nephew saw Dr. Pai and my mom (she took him) says he was nice and he did not even ask her about his vaccines. Their website does show the CDC schedule but that's it. I'm not sure if they take your insurance. Here is their website:

ETA: Their site states they do take Tricare.

I haven't met her-only spoke to her on the phone. I know people who use her and say she's wonderful. From what they tell me, she doesn't press the vaxes.

Im so sorry you had so much trouble with Myrtle Ave!! We spoke to them at length before allowing them to be part of the expo! We will keep this in mind for next year. I know people who have had no problems them.

Doc Holly is great, but she's a DOM, and I can help with out of network insurance benefits, but isn't a traditional Ped.

Why don't you call your insurance and get a list of whos covered? I know some use Dr Solomon in St. Pete

I had a friend with Tricare, she Dr Habib(somewhere in Clwtr) she loved her, but did not do selective vaxing or nurse, so you would want to feel her out a bit.

That's right, if you want a traditional ped, Dr Holly is not one, since she is does both Oriental and Traditional medicine. However, she does practice pediatrics. She is very nice, you could always call her and talk with her or set an appt to meet her. I've been told that kids who normally fear a regular ped, warm up to her and are ok with her.

I know some families who use Dr Solomon-might be a bit far for you?

There was supposed to be a very ap/vax friendly doc in Clwtr some place-I want to say Jackson, (it was a husband/wife practice), but they must not have. My friend went to try them out and they really pushed the vaxes and weren't too bf friendly. They had been at the natural birth expo too, so I thought it a little odd.
Actually, the natural birth network might have links/a list to vax friendly docs around here. I know they had a list of retailers for slings/dipes, etc.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions. I ended up taking DS to see Dr. Pai. I found his name in an old thread and he takes Tricare Prime (the best part). I actually ended up seeing his partner Dr. Hicks and liked her. She was happy to hear that I was still nursing while pregnant with DS (who just turned 2).

Hallielynn01 ~ I was really frustrated with the incorrect statements she made about breastfeeding. I don't know if the other 3 docs know more than her but I was very upset about the misinformation that she was saying about bf'ing.

Dr.Holly will be at the moms circle in Clearwater next week if anyone is interested in meeting her. I haven't met or spoken with her but am looking forward to it. It is on Wednesday of next week at 11am at the UUC in Clearwater on Nursery Rd.

Im going to call Myrtle Ave, set a bit of "chat" I was thinking of checking them out, because honestly I had a great conversation with their office manager about their practices. And finding this news out, post expo, is unacceptable. We will NOT send people there way if they feel this way or are not up to date on breastfeeding. I appreciate the info, and am sorry you went through that.
