We are probably moving down to NC very very soon. Dh hasn't accepted the job yet, but I'm pretty sure he's going to. Is anyone familiar w/ Greensboro? The guy dh will be working for told dh that we probably don't want to live *in* the city b/c of the schools. But we would rather not have to get a second car and I am currently homeschooling (that could change depending on alternative/charter schools, but either way, my kids won't be going to regular public school.) He'll be working at NC A&T. Are there any neighborhoods close enough to bike in that are good for families w/ young kids? We'll be renting a house. Thanks for any info! Btw, I was sort of looking into the neighborhoods in NW Greensboro since that's where the schools and religious stuff we're interested in are located.

Hi there- we have lived in GSO for about four years now. I am surprised to hear that someone said to live outside the county limits because of schools. While I am sure there are good schools outside the county, I feel that the options in Guilford co are quite good with a really wide selection of magnet schools and charter and private. there is also a very active homeschool community.

Honestly, I would recommend our neighborhood for home rentals, but how large is your family? there are some really great little homes in this area and I have seen some for rent too (Guilford Hills is the neighborhood,) but they are on the smaller side, so it depends on what you're looking for. are you asking for a neighborhood close to a&T to bike to? NW GSO is not close to that school. You would probably want to live at least nearer to downtown... or in southern GSO. But... i guess you can always get anywhere from anywhere but it will take longer! They are working on getting more of the roads to be bike friendly, but it's not nearly enough. Good luck! PM me if you have any other questions and I will try to help!

Expecting 1st 5/25/11 after topsy turvy two years of trying. Married to best guy ever. Always <3 .

i can't answer such specific q's for 'where' to live...i can tell you that in city limits gets you perks with the public library and some other services i'm suddenly not recalling specifically.

however, i decided to chime in to let you know about the homeschooling....visit the DNPE website (i'm sorry i have one whining desperately at me so need to be short rather than well linked) for the regulations on it. very family friendly HS laws in NC! also there's some great places for 'classes' like the Natural Science Center (natsci.org) and others. and you can troll yahoogroups for all kinds of homeschooling groups and lists.

good luck on the move! keep us posted!

Hi! I didn't see your replies earlier. I guess I stopped checking in after my thread got buried and forgot to set it to notify me of replies. We are here in Greensboro. We were told not to live in the city, but the county was ok, btw, I think you misread my OP. But I didn't really listen to that either. I found a messageboard for local moms and asked around there. Dh looked in several neighborhoods (we REALLY liked Fisher Park, but the only decent rental house we found in our price range was too small for us and 4 kids--probably only 1200sqft. ) So we are in the Kirkwood neighborhood. My ds is going to school and likes it a lot so far. Most of the houses in our neighborhood are pretty small, but the one we are renting has had a few additions, so it's quite large, but not TOO big, kwim? And we have a really really nice yard.
