I've lived in Alaska for the past 30 plus years and homeschool my 7 year old daughter.  We live a pretty "crunchy" life style.   We have a VERY active homeschool community here and I'm hoping maybe someone here can tell me if such a thing exists in my new town.  I'm anxious to try and find  like minded friends hoping to make the transition for me and my kiddo as painless as possible.

I've never been to North Carolina, so I truly have no idea what to expect.

Also, if anyone has any recommendations for a family doctor that is open to non-vaxing and an orthodontist, I would love referrals.

I live in Chapel Hill but my brother and SIL are in/near Greenville - they are both active in a natural parenting group - Natural Mamas - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Natural_Mamas/

and I'm sure you would find good info/friends in that group - good luck with your move! If you're moving anytime in the next month or two - get ready for the HEAT!!

Thank you.  I will definitely check out that group.   Our moving van comes a week from today, and we are going to go tour the grand canyon before making our way east, so we should be to NC the first week of Sept or so.  I'm hoping it will have cooled down a *tad* by then, but if it hasn't, I don't care :)   I'm soooooooo sick of the summers we've had in south central Alaska the last 4 years or so.  It rains continually and our temps rarely get out of the 60s... hovering more days in the 50s.  I can't take it anymore.  Winters used to be a lot easier to take (and the 30 below temps that come with them) when you had heat in the summer to thaw... but that is non-existent these days.  So, I'm looking forward to some HEAT.  I've been told I'm coming to the right place for that LOL

Hi! We've lived in Greenville for the past 13 years (prior to last January, when we moved to New Zealand LOL). I highly recomend the Natural Mama's group! Erin is the leader and she's a FANTASTIC resource and the group is full of diverse, wonderful women. There are 2 or 3 homeschool groups in town - there is a really large Christian group and another fairly large secular one. I can only speak for the Christian one, but they have field trips and a good number of activities and co-op classes for each age group.

There are a number of really good parks around town and fun activites downtown for kids throughout the year. There is also a LLL group in town, a Holistic Moms group, and I was a part of a doula group, so if you are eventually needing birth services, there are lots of good doulas around to help you out with birth options.

As for vax-friendly docs...we went to Eastern Pediatrics. The male doctor there was "ok" with us not vaxing, though he did bring it up every visit. The female doctors there seem to be much more easy going about  not vaxing. I know there are other drs in town that non-vaxing families use. If you contact the Natural Mamas group and get on their yahoo list, they can give you lots of references and just generally help you plug in with "your people" :)

If you want to PM me any specific questions, I'm happy to help! Especially if your DH is going to work at or near the hospital, as that is my hubby's prior employer. :)
