As an active duty member, I do not have the option of switching to TriCare Standard. According to the hospital, I WILL be giving birth on base. I firmly believes this interferes with my basic rights to ensure the health and wellbeing of my child, and I am wondering if there are any other active duty military members that have found a way to get around this policy. I'm not above paying out-of-pocket expenses. Please help!

Ugh..I'm sorry no help here but probably a good decision to find another option than NHCL. My son was born there 2007...worst birth experience ever. Are homebirths allowed in NC? I guess if yes, you'd have to find a midwife who is willing to help and then pay out of pocket. Tricare is a pain in the rear when it comes to alternative birthing options. Good luck.

Hi, I am also active duty and wanting a home birth. I called tricare and they said to contact midwives that are in the tricare network to see if they will cover it. I called around and the midwives in their network do not perform home births. So, I'm advised to have the baby in the hospital or go out of pocket. I contacted Olivia Marshburn, Nurse Midwife, she charges $3500. I'm curious to know if you've found out any other information. I have yet to talk to the naval hospital to see if they can offer advice. Let me know if you've heard anything different. Thanks :)
