Piedmont Progressive Preschool has a couple of spaces left in its 3s and its 4/5s class for the 2012-2013 school year.  Founded in 2001 by two moms who wanted their children to be able to attend a play based, nature oriented, peaceful preschool in North Charlotte, PPP strives to build social skills through play.  The vision for the preschool was that it be neither for-profit nor religious, and that it promote freedom of thought and action for young children, and embrace a strong sense of visual aesthetics.  The school building is set on wooded grounds, with trails that wind through a forest to a creek.  Outdoors, children search for animals, explore trails, and maintain their own garden.  Indoors, they play with toys made from wood and natural fibers in classrooms carefully designed by teachers to meet the interests and needs of children, while offering a minimal number of props to allow young imaginations to thrive.  Teachers are respectful of children, their feelings and their developmental development.  When conflicts do arise, teachers mentor children as they search for words to express their emotions and as they find peaceful ways of interacting with one another.  Inspired by Waldorf pedagogy, among others, PPP believes that educations should follow the needs of each child, and puts this philosophy in action.  The first few weeks of the school year are devoted to "ease-in", and parents are welcome to visit the school, to check in or volunteer in the classroom any time.  The preschool is run by a council of parent volunteers, and parents are encouraged to take an active role in PPP.
