I'm in Asheville, NC and I'm working to open a 'free school' which is a charter school fall 2015. It would be for grades 6-12. When I say public 'free school' I'm inspired by the Albany Free School and the idea of unschooling a bunch of kids in a building and having tax money support it. The tax money is important because it is of the utmost importance that students living in poverty be able to attend. I'm making this announcement here because I know there are some Asheville unschooling aficionados who may be interesting in supporting or being a part of this work. Let me know!

I'd be very interested! My 11 yr old was just reading about the concept the other day and we were thinking that Asheville would be the perfect place for one to thrive. Keep us informed, please!

Thanks Stormborn! I tried to private message you, but couldn't figure out how to do it.

My school idea has evolved. I'm no longer interested in making it a charter school. I am planning to open a private school. To make it accessible to students in low income households and make it socioeconomically diverse, I want to employ a sliding scale. I also am no longer pursuing the idea of a Fall 2015 opening. The free school idea has stuck. I am actually hoping to hold a mini free school summer experience at UNC Asheville this summer.

Hi there. Just hover over the person's screen name on the left and a drop-down menu will appear. Then click on "Send PM". Hope that helps!

PS: I think most alternatives to traditional schools are an awesome undertaking! Good luck!!

I'd like to follow the progress as well. It has been attempted several other times here in Asheville, but didn't last too long for various reasons. My teen really enjoys attending Endor, which will start back up in the Fall. It is a group for high-school age kids that is very unschooly and self-directed. They do a few activities/programs each week. We're always interested in finding more opportunities

I would love to here more, as well. The intermediate school this past year was a tough transition.
