I am having a hard time moving…we have a nice community hear in the Hudson Valley…but my husband wants to make a change...
Anyone have advice on how it is to live there? Any vegetarian/ no vaxx delayed vaxx families? We visited and toured the waldorf school…my son attends one here in NY…How about mommy friends? Alternative doctors? Quality of life? Any and all advice would be appreciated!
I've lived in Chapel Hill for 10 years and love it here. We have a terrific Yahoo group that you can join before you move. You'll get lots of recommendations for health care providers that meet your needs (mainstream and alternative.) Chapel Jill's sister town, Carrboro, has an excellent farmer's market and Chapel Hill has a smaller one.
I love raising my kids here. I don't have a lot of friends but everyone is friendly here, the weather is terrific most of the year, and we are close to the beach, the mountains, and lakes.
I hope you'll like it here. We've been here about ten years. We moved here bc we correctly guessed it was great for families. There are many families like you're interested in, as polliwog noted.
I homeschool (unschool) my three (almost four!) kids. There is a lot to do! Good luck with your move!
Hi there. I know how difficult it can be moving, especially over large distances.
There are TONS of vegetarian, no vax, delayed vax families in the area. It's overall fairly crunchy. There are lots of mommy/parent/family groups, some that are quite active. Being the "Triangle" area of NC has several universities and the Research Triangle Park, there are opportunities for a pretty good quality of life. If you don't find what you're looking for here, the mountains and beaches aren't too far away.
We're at the Waldorf school and love it. We have a community that seems to be growing closer.

I was trying to respond... Guess I haven't gotten the hang of it
yet
.... Thank you for all the kind responses I am very grateful!
Although this transition will e hard... It is best for our family/ quality of life.
There seem to be so many nice people in CH ... I am starting to feel more at ease.
Maybe we will meet at EWS. Thank you!
I just wanted to echo the sentiments here. There are plenty of vegetarian/no-vaxx families. Our local Waldorf school, Emerson, has a terrific community of parents and teachers and throughout the year, holds multiple events that are open to the rest of the community as well. (The sense of community @ Emerson is one of the primary reasons why we're considering sending my son there next year. He was accepted - we just need to figure out if it's financially feasible now!)
There are also plenty of opportunities to meet like-minded mothers, as well. There are active LLLs that meet at various points in the week. There's also a Chapel Hill/Durham alternative parenting group of awesome moms who discuss everything from sleep strategies to recipes and more. There's also a very strong homeschooling community, if your interests lead you that way.
I know moving is difficult. (I grew up moving every two years so I totally get the dread!) I think, though, that you'll really love this area. It's beautiful, the weather is mostly nice, and you really will find a great community here.
Thank you for taking the time to write this! I am feeling so much better and thank you for the advice on meet-ups and community! I hope you also end up at the Waldorf school…we visited and loved it!
what is the alternate parenting group? I'm from the Triangle and have lived here most of my life but am pregnant with my first and would love to connect with this group, even though I live out in the country!
oops I meant to reply to just that one post mentioning the parenting group. But. Earthmommy18, you will probably really love Chapel Hill. Carrboro is great, and the whole Triangle really does have a lot of cultural activities, museums, and nature to explore. And yes the NC beaches are amazing, plus the mountains are also close by. And the countryside is really nice. The weather is AMAZING in the fall, from September through December, and is ok in Jan-March, then starts getting beautiful in April, and then is super hot during part of the summer, but the trick is to hang out with your kid at the pool or by a river or lake or let him run around in the sprinkler or something. Also summer nights are to die for. You are perfectly comfortable outdoors at night in a tank top, and it's just awesome.
People are probably the nicest while also being culturally interesting of almost anywhere in the country. Very friendly and genuinely nice. I grew up in Raleigh, and then traveled some but came back home to settle down. A lot of people I know also move away, like to New York City, but return here to raise kids.
Lots of vegetarians, and lots of veggie places to eat in Chapel Hill. Weaver Street Market is a great co-op. I think you'll like it.
also, I just happened to be going for a walk on the beach today, my dogs meeting and greeting kids and other dogs, and I met this guy who said he moved down here from Massachusetts about ten years ago and never left because the people were so nice. So anyway. It's really true.
willfullmama - I'm too new here to send a direct message. would you be willing to send me one please?
