Those of you who are involved w/ NCFOM, particularly VBAC Moms....

What kind of assurances are you getting (or not) about preserving HBAC, breech, and twin births in the movement toward licensure?

I am hearing things that have me extremely concerned.

SC moms really count on midwives outside of our borders (sad as that is) to preserve their skills for these types of births. What can you tell me about this?

Thanks so much,

Nikki

Have you joined the ashevillemamas yahoo group yet?

Surely there are a couple doulas in that group that could give you the specifics.

eta: there's NC friends of Midwifery on MySpace.

Something's telling me that nobody really knows what's going on with this stuff except for the midwives themselves and a few key NCFOM activists. I do think that if someone were to get into NC before the legislation was finalized AS a midwife, they might hold a little more sway when the final stuff starts getting nailed down.

Wife of one and mom of five, including my HBAC twins!

Hey Shannon, Christy,

Yes, I've joined Asheville Mamas - what a great resource! I hope to get involved w/ the Asheville Birth Network too.

I learned recently that one of the legislative chairs of NCFOM is an ICAN CL so that eases my anxiety ever so slightly.

I have read one of the drafts of the bill and it states that midwives would be independent maternity practitioners, without restrictions and without the input or backup from a doctor/hospital. Of course, as the bill gets introduced and the haggling begins, who knows what might happen. Hopefully, everything will work out well. I definitely know that the main NCFOM leaders are very pro-VBAC, HBAC, twins, and breeches, so they will do what they can. We also have an excellent political advisor who is working pro-bono to help us navigate the wily labrynyth's of legislation.
