Dh got a new job and we found out we were moving to VA when I was 10 weeks pregnant. By the time I called Birthcare, I was placed 8th on the waiting list (my EDD is at the very end of March, so it makes sense it would have filled up quickly), and I haven't budged from that spot in two months. I am still in SC and have a tolerably good birth situation (but w/ midwives in hospital, not in a BC). I would rather not have to stay in a different state than Dh just because I'm waiting for the baby to be born...

So, I am wondering:

1. If you have experience w/ the waiting list at Birthcare, am I likely to move up? The lady I spoke with was very helpful, and she said they would take me through Feb. if space opened... that's better than nothing, but I don't really like the idea of the situation being so unsettled through February!

2. What are my other alternatives? I really, really would like to avoid a hospital, and Dh is not quite ready for homebirth*. Maybe next baby ... are there other good birthing centers within an hour or so of Fredericksburg?

3. I know there is a Baby-Friendly Hospital up there. Are there any midwives who deliver there? All I could find on staff were OBs.

*I think at this point I could convince him, but we don't even have a house yet, and Dh is living in a 400 sq ft studio apt-- not my ideal birthing location!

We will be within 30 minutes of Fredericksburg, where Dh is working. I think Charlottesville is the farthest we would be willing to travel to the southwest.

The Marshall Birth Center (http://www.marshallmidwiferybirthcenter.com/) will be open by then. Might be easier to get to than coming up 95 to Birth Care (95 can be a bear, although many Birth Care moms do it)?

Depending on where you land, there are homebirth midwives, should you decide on that.

I think that it is Culpeper Hospital that is baby friendly - no midwives.

Lots of options, at least :-) Tammi

Yes, Culpeper-- thank you!

Marshall looks very interesting! That is exactly the kind of information I was hoping for.
