Just found out I'm pregnant with #4 and I have decided that this will be my first out of hospital birth. I'm not sure about a homebirth and I think I feel more comfortable with a birth in a birth center... But I don't know where to start with midwives, so I was hoping I could get suggestions about any in my area. I'm in Fauquier county but Prince William or I guess Culpepper county is ok, too. I'm open to talking to a midwife who does only homebirths, because all I know right now is that I don't want it in a hospital...the rest is undecided. TIA!!

Hi there! Congrats on #4!!! I actually live in Midland not too far from you. I have a couple of midwives and their info for you if you are interested!! I just had a beautiful homebirth with Peggy Franklin, CPM Jan. of 2009. I had such a great experience with her! It wasn't just her, but her whole team that made all the difference in my pregnancy and birth of my dd. I was scared of hb at first too, but my mw has an informational meeting she puts on that discusses issues concerning hb for people that are interested or new to it. Here's her info:

Peggy Franklin
birthbydesign.org
Gainesville, va
703-357-3808

Another midwife I know who has a new birth center opening up in Marshall:
Tierney Dovan
www.marhsallmidwiferyandbirthcenter.com

They are both certified and beautiful ladies! I hope this info helps.
When my dd was born, she came out to Catlett on 28, and she's taking me on as a client now as well (baby #2) and I live in Midland, like I said, so she would probably take you on too. I love how the midwives will spend like an hour with me at a prenatal app. and they helped me so much with nutrition and homebirth preparation classes. They also helped me out with info and articles when my dd turned posterior at 38 wks. Because of their help I was able to turn her around and I delivered my beautiful 9Ib. baby at home!
Anyway, blessings to you and your new baby. Hope the info helps!

I'm a WAHM, married to the man of my dreams, momma to DD 1/23/09 and DS 7/5/10, little one to arrive 1/13 belly.gif                                             slingboy.giffamilybed1.gifhomebirth.jpg I'm kinda crunchy by accident- didn't know I would be like this when I became a mom!!!

Thank you so much for the info!! I emailed the ladies in Marshall yesterday. I'm also glad you mentioned Peggy Franklin. My husband and I used to work with her son and dil for years up until about 6 months ago. When I became pregnant for the third time she offered her services, but I was still naive about the whole thing. I could not remember her name for the life of me.

I highly, highly HIGHLY recommend Marilee Pinkleton. I'm not sure if she goes out that far but I would give her a call to check. She is an AMAZING presence. I can't imagine having any other MW. All prenates are in your home and she doesn't take on too many Mamas so she can really focus on her clients. The personal attention is so great. Even when my HB turned into a bunch of preterm labor and an ultimate hospital birth (@30 weeks)...she was right by my side in the hospital. LOVE her!!

Hi! I am currently seeing Tierney Dovan and Lori Orme with the Marshall Midwifery and Birth Center and they are amazing! My baby is due in 4 weeks, and I will likely be the first client in the actual Birth Center, so I will let all know how it goes! So far nothing but good news about them. They really focus on you and go the extra mile.

Hi mamas. Just writing to let everyone know I had my baby at the Marshall Birth Center on January 3rd! Everything was absolutely perfect. Both midwives met me there at 4:15 am, and my baby girl was born two hours later. Everything was very relaxed and peaceful and no fuss! Both of my previous births were midwife attended hospital births....a world of a difference! These girls really just let you do what you need to do in order to have the birth you want. No interference. Just there when you need them. They really help you to trust your body and the baby, and, as they like to say, "Trust birth!"
They just had a big article in the Fauquier Times-Democrat on Wednesday which I hear is great (I haven't made it out of the house to get a copy!), and Saturday is their big Open House...from 1-4 pm. Highly recommend these ladies to anyone who wants to give birth the way it was intended!
If anybody wants to PM me with questions feel free!

This is an old thread, but I wanted to post in case people find it in a search (like I did when I was looking for a place to have our baby!)
Our baby was also born at Marshall Midwifery and Birth Center this April. It was a perfect experience-- I can't think of anything I would want to change. Tierney Dovan and Lori Orme are both fabulous midwives... like Adya, I would be happy to share more details via PM is anyone is interested

So thankful for our healthy baby boy, born Easter morning, 2010!

Hi there all,

I know this is an old thread but thought it the best fit for my situation.

I'm new to the forum and a first-time mom-to-be. My husband and I are currently living in the Culpeper, Va area. We have been able to successfully calculate my due date around Dec. 16, 2010 which means I'm a little over 2 months now.

I'm positive I want an all-natural, preferably out-of-hospital birth. I've not yet been to see a doctor as I am hoping to soon find a midwife. But, unfortunately, it's proving to be a difficult task to find either a birth center in which a midwife operates from within or a midwife within a reasonable distance of our apartment.

My husband did call the ladies at Marshall Midwifery and Birth Center and left a message today. Hopefully, something will come of that. I've read and heard great things about Lori Orme and Tierney Dovan. And, their practice is only about 50 minutes from our apartment, which I know is still a distance but is the shortest we've yet to see for a reputable midwife.

However, in the event that the above mentioned midwives do not work out, any other suggestions would be more than appreciated. And, any personal experiences anyone is willing to share would be so much appreciated, as well, as this is my first birth and pregnancy.

Thank you, everyone, in advance for all the advice and suggestions.

I was the original poster of this thread and thought that I should just update that I decided to go with Lori and Tierney. I couldn't be happier with my decision, we're going with a birth in their new birth center...or as I like to call it, a "home away from home birth". I'm now almost 28 weeks and so looking forward to the delivery of my last child with these wonderful woman!

@CRhodes1989, I live in Bealeton, so just over the Fauquier county line from you, and the drive really isn't that bad. I don't have any other suggestions, but thought I would add my input on Marshall Midwifery. Good Luck!
