I am new here, I am expecting my first child in November. I was wondering if anybody here has recently given birth (or knows of anyone who has recently given birth) naturally with the CNMs at Hutzel? I signed up with a midwife through University Women's Health. She seemed great but she is leaving the practice so I'm scheduled to meet with a new midwife next appt.
I'm a bit nervous about giving birth in a hospital even though it will be attended by midwives because I got the sense in my first appointments with the original midwife that they will advocate for you but that you're really in a "medical" environment, where the norm is to hook women up to IVs and do the constant fetal monitoring. Also, from what I understand the midwives at Hutzel who would attend the actual birth are different from the ones I've been talking to at Univ. Women's Health, so I won't know them.
Also, I read in the forums here that water births are an option there but when I asked my midwife about it at our first appointment I'm pretty sure she said those aren't possible. Maybe they used to be possible, and now they're not? Or maybe I'm remembering wrong? Has anyone had a water birth at Hutzel?
I'd be up for looking into a HB but I have HAP HMO and I doubt it would be covered. Plus the one person I know of who gave birth at Hutzel a couple of years ago (with the midwife who's now leaving the practice) had a great experience. I live in Detroit, and Hutzel is literally a 3 minute drive from my house, so it couldn't really be more convenient. I've heard about a birthing center attached to a hospital in Southfield and also another birthing center in Taylor, but I figure if Hutzel is actually (still) a good place to deliver I might as well stick with it.
So I'm just wondering if anyone has direct experience with NCB at Hutzel (either with or without midwives)? Are the doctors and/or nurses pushy about medication/induction/c-sections? Do they give you a time limit? Are there doulas that work there, or is it ok to bring one? I'll ask my new midwife all these questions, but I thought I'd check here too just in case there are some firsthand experiences. I just would like to be able to relax and think that if I want to go for a natural birth I can be supported, even if it takes me 14 hours or whatever.
