My husband has a choice of being laid off at the California facility where he works and getting a nice severance OR relocating to Columbus Ohio in July. His salary would be $60k I believe and from what it looks like, we would be in a better boat with that salary in Ohio. We have been struggling financially ever since we had my son 3 years ago. I have never been to Ohio, I have lived in SoCal all my life so it is a little scary. I am pretty liberal and crunchy so to speak so I am afraid of not feeling welcome in a new place. Also, I would not want to live in the heart of the city and I wanna know how crime is in and around Columbus. If anyone can give me pointers on some nice, more suburban places to live near Columbus that would be helpful. Where we are currently is very, very safe so I would like to find something equivalent. We are not sure if we want to take the severance and risk finding a job here in time or take the offer and move to Ohio where it seems we would be better off financially. Please tell me I wouldn't be the only earthy mama there! :)

There was another thread recently in this forum about someone relocating to Columbus and there was a lot of talk of neighborhoods so you may want to look for that and read through it.  I was born and raised in Columbus, and I have friends who still live there who are crunchy and they seem to have found communities where they fit in.  Clintonville has a lot of cool folks.  It's near downtown but not too close.  I grew up in Grandview Heights.  It is very safe and they have good schools, but it's probably not very crunchy.  There's a group of homebirth midwives and doulas called CHOICE who have been around for a long, long time.  It's definitely cheaper to live there.  You can find a decent house for less than $200k in most places.  Good luck making your decision!
