Hello,

I am considering a homebirth in Cleveland, OH and will be new to the area.  Does anyone recommend a particular midwife?  Does anyone know of any hospitals that would be friendly toward the idea of co-care?  Does anyone recommend any books to help me navigate this territory? (the territory of home birthing in general, I've never done it before).

Also, home birthing in Ohio has become underground and everything is very unregulated.  Does anyone have any advice about knowing how to measure a midwifes qualifications in this type of environment?

Any tips would be so helpful.

Thank you!

Hello Maryinthewindow! Welcome to Mothering and congratulations on your pregnancy! I don't know much about midwives in the Cleveland area, but I know a great group in Columbus that has been around for a very long time. CHOICE http://www.choicemidwives.org/
They are involved in midwifery issues in Ohio and I would imagine they would be able to refer you to someone in Cleveland and give you more info about homebirth in Ohio in general. I haven't read many books about homebirth specifically, but I would recommend reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth by Ina May Gaskin. It's a great book and all of the births they talk about were attended by homebirth midwives. Good luck!

Hi Maryinthewindow!
I JUST found out I'm pregnant but am also in Cleveland and interested in a home birth. Lucky for me, my close friend is a doula. She gave me this link:

This is a great group and network where you can find a qualified home birth Midwife and/or Doula.

http://icanofgreatercleveland.org

I have had two natural births at St. John's in Westlake and used Westshore Midwifery, they don't do home births, although one of the Midwives there Erin has in the past http://www.westshoremidwifery.com/about/.

Good luck!

Hi!
I live in the Cleveland area, and attended the homebirth of both of my nieces. The midwife my SIL used was AWESOME. Her name is Pam Kolanz. I contacted her recently about similar things, and here is what she said:

"The only real birth center for non-amish moms is the Mahoning Valley Birth Center http://mahoningvalleybirthcenter.com/... it's located in Youngstown and probably quite worth the drive. Other than that, St. John-Westshore has their "Holistic Birth Center" which is actually just one room at the end of the labor hallway. I would recommend Pam Hetrick & Iola - they are midwives at Lake West. I have no recommendation for Hillcrest Hospital and generally tell people to avoid it at all costs. I do not do hospital birth... but I am used to and not bothered by yelling/cursing in labor should you desire a home birth. ) My complete fee for prenatal/birth/postpartum is $1,500 - yea, dirt cheap! I don't bill insurance but happily provide a receipt for monies paid so that clients can submit for reimbursement."

Her email is [email protected]. I have a few friends who have used her and she comes highly, highly recommended.

Hope that helps!

Welcome to NE Ohio, Maryinthewindow. May I encourage your positive impression of Ohio home birth? ~~ the overwhelming majority of the midwives in our state are 'out-n-about', definitely not underground! And, may I encourage the discovery process of home birth? Of my 4 home born children (3 can claim Ohio home births : ) and I'm a longtime domiciliary midwife. There are plentiful excellent resources online to assist in the exploration of home birth and securing the services of a competent and experienced midwife. on mothering forums, here is one thread: Homebirth Midwife Interview

enjoy your journey!

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering, are there any moms who have had a home birth (or are planning one) who can recommend a pediatrician friendly to my personal choices? I prefer more natural parenting than what most doctors "approve of".

Thanks!
