Considering a move to Columbus, OH

Hello there.
I'm considering a possible move to Columbus, OH in order to get some much needed medical care at Nationwide Children's Hospital for my 3 year old son's rare disease. The only specialist in the country is there.

I would be moving from the Bay Area in California. I've only ever lived in coastal California and New York City, so this would be a change for me.

Right now we are just planning an initial visit, but I would like to know what neighborhoods you might suggest I look at for potential homes to rent.

I work from home and make a relatively low income in California, but it could probably be stretched more in Ohio. I'm politically progressive/radical, love art and literature and diverse environments.

Thank you!

I am so sorry to hear about your son.

We currently live in Northern Ohio, but love Columbus and hope to move there one day. The most "liberal" neighborhoods are close to downtown, which is where the hospital is near if I remember correctly. I would look into German Village, Victorian Village and even The Short North. Rent is a little higher in those neighborhoods (mostly all historic homes that are converted into rentals), but they are all very walkable and filled with young progressives.

If you want to live a little farther out, Clintonville is still relatively liberal while probably being more affordable. I would think Granview would be good as well.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

So sorry to hear about your son. I've heard great things about Children's.

I wanted to add that if you're looking for a midwife, the group at Carepoint Gahanna is great. There are also 2 groups of homebirth midwives in the area -- CHOICE and Born.

Cbus is a beautiful city and all of the places you mentioned are wonderful. I lived just north of campus when I was in college and adored the city. If you can afford rentals in the short north, german or victorian villages go for it! If you want to get a car (if you don't have one?) any of the suburbs are nice. Hilliard, Dublin, Westerville are all very nice. I was reading an article that Dublin was the 8th nicest suburb in America.

Sorry about your son, but I am glad Ohio can get you the care you need!

Hi all - thank you so much for your recommendations so far!
While the prices in those neighborhoods mentioned certainly beat those of the SF bay area where I currently live, do you have any thoughts about more affordable parts of Columbus? My son's illness has meant that I've taken quite a financial hit and even those neighborhoods are a bit too high for me at the moment.
Thank you!
