Hi all,
I would like to compile a list of all of the local lactation consultants that come with a Gold Star of Approval for my DONA resource list. It's hard to find a comprehensive list online!

I think Margaret Wills is wonderful. I don't have time at the moment to look up contact info, but I'm sure it's easily google-able. I think she's in Silver Spring and the Breastfeeding Center in DC.

good luck!

Vergie Hughes; I think she's either in MD or DC-ish area. She founded the Lactation Education Resources program, and helped her daughter to breastfeed despite severe hypoplasia.

From the LER website:

Our program director is Vergie Hughes RN, MS, IBCLC, FILCA. She has been a lactation consultant for over 25 years, has served on the IBLCE Board of Directors and exam writing committee and has taught classes for both professionals and parents. She has worked in a variety of settings including labor and delivery, post-partum, hospital breastfeeding centers, private practice and milk bank as a clinician, researcher and teacher. She started the first Lactation Consultant Training Program on the East Coast in 1990.

The lactation consultants at Washington County Hospital in MD were great when I was there in 2006 and 2008.

I went to Kim Knight in Severna Park. I believe she used to run the breastfeeding support groups at AAMC too, don't know if she still does it, that was 3 years ago.

Pat Shelley at the Breastfeeding Center in DC! She saved me from a horrendously painful early experience, and helped my SIL keep bfing when her milk didn't come in for days (as in, no colostrum whatsoever). She's fantastic!

I think the INOVA Fairfax hospital has a great Lactation center. The hospital is on Gallows Rd.

Not quite NoVa or MD, but Jane Squires (eastern panhandle of WV in Martinsburg) is incredible. She let her IBCLC lapse but is taking the test again soon, so I'm sure she will be again. She's been a lactation consultant and childbirth educator for over 10 years after 20 years as a labor and delivery nurse. I'll pm you her email address if you'd like.

Lori Schubert in Northern Virginia. She makes housecalls or can see you at Advanced Pediatrics in Vienna, Virginia. She save me when I was having a horrible time with my new baby We are still breastfeeding at 6 months.

I don't know what a gold star of approval is, but you can find a complete list of IBCLCs online via our professional organization http://www.ilca.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3432  (If the link doesn't work go to www.ilca.org and click on 'find a lactation consultant')

In MD I second the ref for Margret Wills, also Lynette Hafken, Amber McCann, Ann Faust, Peg Merill, Kathleen Stahl and Becky Nicodemous.  I think all their contact info (Flossie, too, saw her myself with dc1!) is on this page: http://www.breastfeeding.com/directory/states/maryland.html  PM me if you need more contact info for any of them.  They're all great.  thumbsup.gif

I saw two lactation consultants at Inova Loudoun when I had my son. I was unimpressed with one of them, but Tracy Cross was wonderful. She followed up with me after I was discharged to make sure everything was still going well. I really don't know if I could have done it without her help.

Amber McCann, she is the bomb!  Helped me with my 3rd - I am now 11 weeks in to my first successful nursing relationship!
