I may take heat for saying this, but I really don't agree with it.

I think it violates some people's privacy. If we are making them post little signs on their lawn, why not paint "SEX OFFENDER" on their doors in huge red letters? Keep in mind, a lot of people who are sex offenders aren't pedophiles, sometimes their charges aren't that serious (ex- 20 year old who gets in trouble for being with a 17 year old), and they've served their time. Besides we already have web databases you can look people up in directly.

My other issue with it is that it gives parents a false sense of security when letting their kids trick-or-treat.

Really, the best way to combat children being preyed on is to always have one (or more) trust-worthy adult with a group of kids when they go out. It also prevents other bad things from happening (ex- kids getting into mischief, kids getting bullied by bigger kids, kids getting hit by cars, etc...).

I've got to agree with Red Lil Mamma. The sex offenders database is notoriously full of people who are not a threat to children. To me it seems like another scare tactic for parents and children alike. Pedophiles are not usually strangers anyhow.

Nearby, trustworthy adults seem like the best defense to keep kids safe.

I would support the signs if they didn't include statutory rape charges.

My other thought is, if these people are so dangerous that you have to label their houses on Halloween, why are they out of jail?

Makes you wonder, huh?

My kids just go around our neighborhood and we know everybody so I don't worry about the neighbors. I do worry about the being out at night and possibly running across the street in the dark, etc. though.

I would think this makes the offender a target.

Seems to me that lights off, at home (have a parole officer call them or vist, whatever they are doing to follow up on it anyway), don't answer the door seems good enough to me. If you're really concerned there are maps available of registered sex offenders homes. You can look at the neighborhood ahead of time. But really...as if any potential threat to your child is already a registered sex offender anyway.

Just as a side note, I know people who now have to be registered sex offenders because they got drunk and urinated on the beach near where I used to live. The deal is that they were near playgrounds and it was public indecency, but you wouldn't expect kids to be around at 3am.

Dh and I had talked about this too. I can just see a bunch if teenagers egging someone's house (or beating the crud out of someone).

They should just have the offenders who are child molesters do this!
