I'm trying to find a good homebirth midwife in the Northern NJ area. I met up with one last week, and I really love her, but the outlay of money she wants (even if it will eventually be mostly reimbursed by our insurance) may just make it financially impossible for us to do and still afford our mortgage, car and keep food on the table. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Depending on where you are in Bergen County, you could try Anne Margolis. http://www.imamidwives.com/

Where in Northern NJ??? I think you need to be more specific. Also, did you search this forum? This gets asked a lot and there are many great answers to read through.

Good luck.

I did look. Thanks. I was hoping for recent reviews and found nothing within the past 6 months other than the names of two people I already contacted so I thought it was appropriate to ask.

Have you tried talking more with them about the fee? I was able to pay my midwife over a period of time because we weren't able to do it all up front.

Not sure how far you are from them, but Hackettstown Midwives has a homebirth practice as well. http://www.hackettstownmidwives.com/index.php

Another vote for Anne! She's awesome! Depending on your insurance, she may only require a $500 deposit.

Another MW worth connecting with would be Martha Roth, based out of Nyack.

I used the Hackettstown Midwives (in the hospital) and they were great! They do homebirths with Judy Hagan now and there's also Jessica Lawlor (who is coming to our Holistic moms open house Tuesday night unless she has a birth to attend to).

another vote for Anne Margolis, I've used her for all my homebirths she is a cnm located in suffern, NY I am in northern jersey about 20 mins from her. I know she accepts insurance so she can submit claim after baby is born. I paid her a $500 deposit each time which is refunded after insurance company pays. My good friend uses Jessica Lawlor. I cannot recommend her myself bec I have never used her, but I hear she is wonderful.

I used Jessica Lawlor 10 months ago and loved, loved, LOVED her. Our birth was amazing, she made me feel comfortable in every way and was available whenever I needed her. I'd definately go with her again for our next.

I interviewd jessica and LOVED her. She was willing to work with me on payments. I decided to work with Judy Hagen who I also LOVED because her general policy is to only pay up front what insurance does not cover. I personally felt more comfortable with that than someone making an exception. Another wonderful midwife who I interviewed and adored was Dina Auricho www.newbirthexperiences.com. Good luck!

I had Lisa Robertson deliver our son. Her name is now actually Lisa Gambini since she was recently remarried and changed her name.

She came to our house for appointments, which was really great and super convenient. However, I should note that often the appointments were rescheduled by her or she arrived a little late (this was not a very big deal for us).

She was very good at assessing the position and size of the baby, and listening to the heartbeat, etc. She gave me a urine test every appt to check for protein, etc. She also helped me diagnose an iron-deficiency, and gave me advice on how to correct it (which worked well).

When I went into labor, I called her several times to tell her my status. My contractions were irregular, however after a while they got very intense. She waited until I was 2 minutes apart to decide that she should definitely come over. Then it took her about an hour to get to our home. She arrived as I was pushing the baby out. She helped me to stand up to deliver the baby, and she caught it with her hands. I wished she had come earlier, but I felt relieved that the baby was delivered without complications.

After the birth, there was an issue with us not receiving the birth certificate. Lisa kept telling us that they are 5 months behind since there was only one lady processing all of the home birth certificates. Finally, after several months, I called the Office of Vital Records, and found out that there was not a birth certificate form for my son in their system. The office told me that there is a whole department processing records and they process the birth certificates within 2 weeks. Also there was not an Acknowledgement of Paternity form in their system, which there should have been (Lisa told us she sent that in as well). We are not sure whether Lisa never sent them out, or if they were lost by the Office of Vital Records. As of today, I finally am re-submitting the forms and mailing them out.

I have heard that other people were really happy with Lisa as their midwife. In my opinion, she is really nice and seems to have a lot of experience. However, we were disappointed with her arriving so late for the actual birth, and frustrated with the missing birth certificate. I'd like to assume that these were a fluke and normally she is an awesome midwife.
