Dear Moms,

Do you know a lactation consultant in NYC that helped you where other LC's failed? If so, please send on her info -- I've seen 3 already and they haven't been able to solve my issue.

I'm in week 5 of breastfeeding purgatory. My daughter seems to be getting enough to eat, but I'm in a ton of pain when she nurses. I've seen 3 lactation consultants (including going to Realbirth's clinic), done a phone consult with LLL, and have had 2 craniosacral therapy appointments for my daughter, plus spoken with a ton of friends and done lots of reading. I'm at my wit's end.

No matter what I do, she latches on by clamping down her jaws. It works for her but is excruciating for me. I need to find a way of re-training her to latch differently

It's easy to find listings of LC's that I could call; but I'm looking for someone who is a really experienced problem solver -- I need to bring in the "big guns". Please share any recommendations you have!

--Anna (mom to Varenne, 5 weeks)

Fredda Rosenthal? I've heard excellent things about her.

Good luck!

try Tamara Joy Hawkins or Leigh Anne O'Connor. Have you called LLL? The NYC leaders are great for this kind of thing.

dd #1 11/15/07 and dd #2 unplanned and so glad the midwife was on her way!

I would jump to the breastfeeding doctor at this point. When I had severe pain and a treatment-resistant infection 10 months into breastfeeding and consulted 3 IBCLCs, family doctor, dematologist, etc... I was finally referred to her and ONE piece of spot on advice saved my breastfeeding relationship. I was so impressed how she zeroed in on our exact issue so quickly and so competently fixed it, whereas I was getting such differing advice from everyone else. She can see patients in NYC.

I should say before seeing her I did pay a small fee to access her files online, and while they seem short when you read them, they actually are very accurate. It cuts through the endless different opinions you hear from breastfeeding sites/experts.

In addition, have you tried "The Flipple" method of latching?

You could google it, but this animation shows it... http://www.breastfeedingmadesimple.c...atedlatch.html

basically using the lower lip to catch onto the areola then when babys head goes forward to cover nipple it draws the jaw down more and you flip the nipple in. Works so well for me.
